In general most OEM ecu's will always cut fuel. They wont want unburnt fuel getting dumped into the cat's which would destroy them.

As to why the motor would blow, harder to say. I didnt tune them or know how they were tuned. But I know that Motec and many other ecu manufacturers do recommend a fuel cut over spark only.
