Absolutely true! When I called Bell I was wanting to get a 6 inch thick horizontal style. He asked about my set up and told me I was going at it all wrong. He did his math and emailed me the design for the intercooler I have now. Gerhard said this is the intercooler you need. Gerhard Shcruf has been working with forced induction for over 40 years, he and Corky Bell started Bell intercoolers together, Gerhard worked with Ferrari on their race team for a few seasons helping with their FI cars, and also designed the Comprex supercharger. Once I read all that how could I not take his advice on what intercooler I needed.

The benefit to the vertical IC is the lower pressure drop. The majority of temperature drop is in the first ~4" of the core. If that first 4" is 12 inch wide, a 24" wide core will have half the velocity meaning less pressure drop and more time to cool. They are a little harder to package due to the added height of the end tanks but there is huge benefit.

I think it would be way to much work going from 3 to 4 inches. Plus you would have to open the holes in the end caps and then I would worry about all the aluminum shavings getting in the core. If a treadstone 3 in opening is all your budget allows then go that route
