Default A2W intercooler for Holley Modular Hi–Ram Intake

Here is a look at our test piece for the Holley intake. This is not for the faint of heart, but the guy that cares for nothing more than going fast. The IC measures 5.2" tall and is 1000HP capable. We also have a 1,500HP unit as well.

We started this project a year ago and are finally tooled up to release it. This started life as a an intecooler for our twin turbo marine engine with fully water-cooled exhaust, but had a lot of automotive customers asking about it. So here it is.

Please note this is a test piece. The production units are milled out of a block of billet aluminum.

Is that using a garrett / Honeywell core? From the looks of the core there looks to be loads of room for a custom core!

That is correct, it is a garret core. The 1,500HP IC utilizes a custom core that takes up a lot more real estate.

Would like to see the 1500 bhp version! is this a dual pass setup? Have you considered going single pass for the cooling water? Kurt Urban has posted some results of his whipple 2.9 and said he was struggling to get the water flow though the core with it being a dual pass, even with very high water presure.

Any plans to make a shorter version with a bigger surface area core? If you could get it down to a a few inches in tease in hight but still able to cool the air you might beable to sell more. Just a thought.

The 1500HP version is identical with the exception of the surface area of the cooler. We did this to reduce cost, and if a customer wanted to upgrade their engine package. All they have to do is send the cooler back to us and we can make a couple of small modifications and swap out the cores. In the marine market hood clearance is generally not an issue and even with this massive core on the motor it still measures less than a supercharged big block with an IC. In our target application with top mounted turbos the tall manifold actually gives the whole engine some ascetically pleasing symmetry. By the time the marine manifolds, risers, and turbos are mounted you can barely see the cooler at all.

The reason for the dual pass is two fold. First, anyone that has seen a high performance offshore boat has seen how the plumbing can get out of hand. Utilizing a dual pass design allowed us to have the huge -16 lines enter and exit at the rear of the motor. This allows the IC lines to be routed with the fuel and raw water supply lines. Second, we get a better efficiency number and more constant IAT's throughout the plenum by running dual pass. Due to the size of the core we have no issues with coolant flow.

We always thought that this would appeal to only a small percentage in the automotive market due to the size envelope. And we are working to make a more compact cooler to broaden the market for our inter cooler line. I hope to have a piece I can test on our engine dyno in a few short weeks. The cores I'm looking at should get us to less than 1/2 of that thickness. I'm hoping not to loose much more than 10% efficiency as we are already near 100% with this design, but only time and test will tell.

How much height / space was needed for it? Also what dimensions were the core used? form memory it was only about 2inch thick so would need more core area for the same core volume.
