I worked as a turbo designer for a company in Indianapolis years ago, we designed turbos for agricultural use & all had V band clamps on both sides of the compressor cover, intake side & compressed output side. Most of the exhaust connections to the turbo were a 4 bolt flange with a V band on the discharge side from the turbo.

Buddy just damaged the compressor wheel from it being mounted to "solid", you want some flex on the compressor housing. I'll coupler the compressor outlet, and vband the rest if you want.

Even the expansion/contraction of the engine, exhaust, plumbing etc could all be enough to cause problems, even if everything is bolted to the engine and not even touching the chassis.

There has to be some give in it somewhere.

Don't forget you can bead roll or ring your piping for the silicone clamps to reduce the chance of blowing them off.

Also fabrication skills are higher on vbands because the tolerances are less. If your slightly off you can make it up in the clamp.

So do you guys weld v-bands flanges right on the end of a turbo or supercharger?

I was going to do it but when the high quality v bands are 30 dollars a pop and I need 4 of them. its a little hard to justify running them since I only make 12 psi of boost. now if you are like dschmittie then yea it be good to run a v band on something over 15-20 psi of boost so you don't blow couplers off.

and yes edge. one on the blower one on the tb and one on both sides of the intercooler if you are running one.

If building your own cold side leave very little room between the pipes as possible.
Bead roll the ends with a good hi ridge.
Clean all the pipe clamp area. To remove any bending wax or polishing compound.
Good clamps
And all should be fine.
