Default Can you "flush" a turbo?

Maybe a dumb question but I just tried putting some fresh oil in the top of my s480 since I destroyed a main bearing and wanted to see if any flakes got into the turbo. So I'm pouring into a small funnel and it's not draining through the turbo still oil in the funnel. I've got a very slow drip out the return line. Is this normal? Does it need pressure to go through? Or do I have a issue? Turbo spins free. Like normal.

I don't think it s a dumb question in the least bit. I must say i have had my hands on many turbos and never tried this. There for i don't have an answer but am looking forward to one.

I'm getting 1 drop out the return every 3 seconds. Guess I thought that oil would just pour through.

Try spinning the turbo by hand, that is what I had to do to prime my turbo

Spun it for a minute didn't make a difference. So I just filled the funnel to the top. Gonna let it drain through the turbo and fill the return line. I have the end of the return line up so it should sit in the middle and I should be able to have a good amount of oil come out and see if there is any flakes.

Turbochargers are precision items, there are orifices for bearings, and of course the bearings themselves.

So no, oil poured under gravity will not make it's way through those tight clearances easily.

So what would be the best way to "flush" a turbo out? I had a main bearing fail as well. In my case, I have to flush two turbos.

I would say find a way to pressurize the oil or try a compressed air/oil mixtures

Cant say it's something Ive ever needed to do.

You could just run the engine with new oil, and change it a couple of times and be done with it.

That way you have plenty of fresh oil going to the turbo...fresh filtered oil.

Couldn't you just put a cap on the oil pan return bung and un-hook the drain line, then overfill the motor with an extra quart, start and run the car and put a pan under the turbo drain and run a quart of clean oil through it from the motor then shut it off and re-hook the turbo drain to the bung in your oil pan.
