what do I need to go 8s?

Default what do I need to go 8s?

I really want to go turbo in the near future. I also really want to go 8s. can I do this with a 5.3? Ive seen some videos of 5.3s going 8.90s but it seems like they all take a long time to spool. I was thinking like twin gt35s might make more power. then again would it be easier to do with a 6.0 and a 88mm or twin 76s? what ever I end up going with my buying a good intake and cam. Its going in a 3000 pound s10 with th400.

stock 4.8 with a soft tune on 93. all day baby, like white on rice!

Can you do it with a 5.3? You do realize there are 4-cylinders running 6's, right?

Twin GT35s would make the power, so would an 88, so would twin 76s. Honestly, they're all overkill. A $649 borg warner S475 (75mm) right out of the box is capable of 8s.

Find out how much power it takes to run an 8 second pass at whatever weight you'll be at, and then pick a turbo that is capable of that much power. The smaller the turbo the faster the spool.

a good 60 foot.
as little weight as possible
a damn good tuner. (yes I know i said that twice)

thats what 8's take.


Billet S480 with a racecover like the one I have listed for sale would easily make the power needed to do so. 500 off what it cost new and it IS new.

He said 8s. I can think of at least one car in the 7s with a billet 80.

I went 8's at 2850 with a JY 8.6:1 317 headed gen3 5.3 on a cast s475 1.10 AR 83/74 wheel. With a trans brake and 2 step it didnt not take long to build boost. It doesn't take near the turbo you are looking at either. Use 2" hotside piping and 2.5" coldside and it will help alot.

I was recently looking at upgrading to an S480 on my 5.3 setup. I found the S480 is overkill. Also I'm told told unless it's paired with a 96 exh wheel it's a back pressure monster. Generally you want the exh wheel a good deal larger than the comp wheel for less back pressure and better "leverage".

I'd look at a beefed up S475. The new aggressive angle 6 blade 75mm billet comp wheel coupled to a T4 1.25AR housing and 87mm wheel. Would be quick spooling combo with lowish back pressure. Would allow you to run a decent cam and plenty capable of 8's at a 3k weight. You can get these for 899 shipped.

Are those cars running JY engines? Which is what I assume he is referring to with referring to 5.3 and 6.0.

My 5.3 with a PT88 spools plenty fast. I haven't run 8's yet but should be able to here shortly. I can double check my logs but I get to 10lbs on the TB in 2.5-3 seconds and 18-19psi just over a second into the run.
