Default precision 6766 failures...

has anybody on here with a JOURNAL bearing 6262-6768 sized turbo NOT had any issues with their turbos? every time I see a post with someone selling a journal bearing unit it says 'just rebuilt', and it seems like they're eager to sell it for something different. there's absolutely no denying the fact that a lot of them have pooped out on people... but they must sell tons as well. not to mention I'm sure most of the people that had bad luck shouldn't stand within 15ft of a turbo car... let alone attempt to build one. LOL. i would consider buying a JB unit but I'm not paying for a BB... If I was spending that much I'd go with something entirely different. So- back to the original question... anybody here that has properly installed a JB precision 6766 or smaller, and had good luck with it making good power... or can anybody say that they've hurt one and not been at fault? Thanks

I purchased a used 6262 JB for my Audi a while ago and after pushing it hard for a couple of months, the compressor wheel just ate itself. Not sure if the previous owner had put his hands on it, but the bolts to CHRA had loosened to cause catastrophic failure. After purchasing a new 6262 and 6265, never had any issues. In my opinion they have great turbos and if you are buying new from a vendor, there should be nothing to worry about as long as there is proper oil feed and return on your setup.

Precision doesn't know what they are doing assembly wise, lol. I ran the billet 6765s for a couple months and had them passing oil(purchased brand new). I had them rebuilt by Alamo Turbos, when they pulled the turbos apart they knew exactly what was wrong. I ran those turbos for over a year with zero problems after the fact.

Lost two 6266's journal bearing on an Evo. We were pushing 44lbs out of it granted. But one broke on start up. Lot's of Evo folks are breaking shafts on the 6667 models as well. Hit or miss with these things.

I sold 3 6766's to a guy in The middle east for 3 different single turbo applications.... All 3 of them leaked oil out the turbine oil seal on startup.... and they refused to fix them.

That's why I call them the "666"7 instead of the 6766. Devil turbos breaking **** all the time.

Check out Supraforums. There are entire threads dedicated to failures of the exact sizes you mentioned as they are very popular in the Supra world for street cars.

Several turbo builders chimed in and stated Precision's QC is downright pathetic. They have inspected brand new turbos that were out of spec.

I have not had any issues out of mine. Perhaps I was one of the lucky ones. Less than 5k miles on it currently.

Just finished rebuilding one for a 2JZ-GTE swapped Lexus SC 300. Thrust washer and bearing were toast. Compressor wheel had made contact with the housing. Guy who sold it to my buddy with the Lexus claimed it was not in that condition when he sold it. I asked how the hell could it have damaged the wheel in shipping? The seller is going to pay for the kit and my labor to rebuild at least. Curious to see how long this thing lasts on the car.

I am even more turned off by high dollar turbos after seeing this thing and hearing what Precision wants for a rebuild. When I go to turbo my 5.3 swapped Volvo wagon it will get only the finest of ebay turbos considering this $1000+ Precision unit failed with so few miles on it.

Would it make you feel better to know my on3 7665has been running strong with no hiccups for 5k hard driven miles? I wish on3 made a 7675 equivalent.

The precision 7675 however you don't hear of that many failures in that turbo. Most people really like that turbo, I'm running a billet 7675 and have had zero issues with it and I Love it.

g note for both. Tough to swallow... my 6765s were billet wheel, ported housing with v band hotsides... not a cheap item.

Yup...sadly enough these turbos are huge in the Supra world where I came from and they have been known to have issues for one reason or another. This is why I laugh when some peoples argument in the import world is "you pay what you get for" type mentality then I join you great folks and see the "el cheapo" turbos spanking *** without many issues at all.

Seems like the PTE QC has really taken a dip in the last few years since being in the spotlight. I know a few guys who ran their turbos a few years back with no issues and lots of abuse but now I would consider buying their turbos a potential risk.

Man this thread is depressing. I have a pair of new 6766's waiting to go on for my build. Makes me wonder if I should even try using them now

Ive heard precisions quality has gone down hill lately. I have about 7k of thrashings on my 7675cea and no problems yet.

This supports what I said earlier, I think some of their units they still build very well and others are just hit and miss. I'm very happy with my CEA7675
