I would just keep it and run it! It is a good turbo. What were the specs of it ? What AR? That will give you a better idea of spool time.

Not trying to make the guy feel bad. No one has said it's not a nice turbo either. The point that was being made is his buddy stuck it to him and he only wants 600hp. That's been done over and over with a 250$ GT45. Just hate the guy didn't look into it a bit more for his own sake.

OK, but is the value of a turbo only determined by the amount of power that it can make?

No, but nothing about that turbo is worth 2500.

Ball bearing 88mm turbos with billet wheels, race covers, extended tip turbine wheels and years of New technology outperform the y2k for quite a bit less.

Hell, a billet Pro Mod 88mm can be had for that price if you look around hard enough, and they're rated for 1650+.

Ouch. $2500 for one of those giant POS' s is not good. The S480 or a PT88 in a t4 housing are half the price, easier to package and make more power.

Value of the turbo is somewhat reflected in price, yes. But that turbo is years out of date. It's just a bunch of factors that go along with him buying this one for 2500$. Really hate it for him.

Not a bad turbo but old technology. For that price, you can get a billet 80/82/84/88 which will spool faster and make more power. I would sell it or see if your "Friend" will return it and get a turbo better suited to your application.

All of those can be had in billet for less than 2000, even with race covers and even custom turbine wheels.

For the guys saying that the turbo is not that bad, it's like buying a compaq pc from 2002 at full retail price in 2014. Sure it's a quality computer and probably still runs, but you could buy a modern one and get far more performance for far less price. You wouldn't buy a pentium 4 pc for $2500 now would you?
