Default Safe timing for pump gas

I have tried searching with very little luck so I am asking the experts. I Recently built a 5.3 with ls6 cam with a 78mm turbo in a 1985 foxbody mustang. I am running a th3500 with 3800 stall and trans brake. I am running on 9 psi. What kind of timing should I be running with 91 octane fuel. I have been running around lately on 14 degrees with good luck. Am I pushing my luck or is 9 psi with 14 degrees timing alright for pump gas. Also If I decide to run 105 octane race gas what timing would you guys recommend.

I am going back to the track friday to try the new gears. I recently had 3.73 gears and ran a 11.48 @ 122 mph but I could not get full boost in first and I had major traction problems. So I am hoping for some low 11's to high 10s with the new 2.73 gears and traction. Thanks, Jared

You are close but pump gas is always a gamble. With race gas you can run in the high teens with a little more boost.

Look at denmah's JY builds. He's got the hand of moderate boost pump gas LS motors similar to yours. 10-12* 12-17psi with a very basic water/meth injection kit seems to be the sweet spot on most of his builds.

Probably 6 or 8 build threads floating around here... Here is an example.

Ya. I would do race gas but I drive this on the street alot for fun And that gets expensive. And we dont have e85 available here. As the weather has cooled to 60-70s I have been running 14 degrees timing. I Hope that should be safe for winter and as it gets back to the 90-100 degree temps I will back it down to 12 or so.

make a pass then back it off to 12*and see if it runs the same. or if the mph picks up just see what it likes within reason. mine is 10# boost and 11* timing on pump 93 only.mine runs mid 10s at 130 that way. but its a 6.0 w/3.23 gear.

Ill try that. Thanks. Ya mine was 122 mph with the 3.73 gears. I am hoping the 2.73 keeps me in the powerband longer. The 3.73 went through first and second way to fast.

I run 17 degrees at 9lbs with my L33 on 91 pump gas. Been doing this for 3 years now. I have it pull timing if the intake or water temps get too high. I could probably add more timing after peak torque but it's just a street tune. I don't suggest you start that high, but you could end up there. Watch mph at the track. When it stops picking up pull a degree out and you should be good.

Awesome. If you guys think 14 is safe on 9 psi ill leave it there. I also have it where it starts to pull timing if the iat gets above 130 degrees.

I ran mine a lot at the track with 14psi and 15 degrees timing on just 93. Now im at 17-18lbs and 15 with about 1/3 110 in tank. Plugs look good and actually could use more timing. It has picked up mph every time I turn it up. I kept waiting on it to slow down but it never did so I just left it at 15 for now.

i think your fine at 14*. if it were me though id back the timing off to 11* and run 18 psi. safe and will make POWA.

agree with above..more boost over timing. I think it will live longer.
