Default What fan CFM will keep these turbo cars cool?

Hey guys your fellow LT1 guy here,

Just as the title implies, what CFM will keep the cars cool? My main concern is if I where to get caught in traffic somewhere. I have a AC delete as well. I have the Griffin 25241X rad and I wanted to get the 2 largest fans I could fit which seem to be 2 12" if that. My stock LT1 fans are outta the question because there is no room left. Im am trying to figure out whats the best fans to get because staying cool is very important. The car wont be a daily driver it will be 80% a track car. But the days I do drive it, I just dont want it to be a sketchy deal sitting in traffic and over heating.

Thanks!

I ran griffin 55241x rad with hacked up stock ls1 fans/shroud to "fit" it. It works well enough in most situations. 80-85 deg ambient most time its around 210 deg, sometimes 200 highway cruise. Once i was in line to the track and had to idle for 30-35 min and stop n go, it went up to 235-240 deg.

I am thinking of doing 10" duals that fit better over rad because ls1 fan setup is 19" tall. My rad is 15.5". Not surewhat i will do

Thanks a lot. Thats what I am getting at, I dont want the car to get that hot (235-240 deg). So I was seeing which fan combo would keep the temps down the best. I think dual LS fans is close to 4,000 cfm if Im not mistaken. So I am thinking anything short of that will produce hi temps. Big No No

I'm also gonna try hood vents/extractors

Really need to make sure fans are sealed against rad and pulling air thru rad and not around it. Thats a thick core rad. Harder to move air thru.

220 isnt hot, 230's is gettin warm but certainly doable

I guess your right on the temp. I have the WSQ hood so I have heat extractors which should help a little.

Water wetter did nothing for me. I wrapped and insulated most of myengine bay.
I think the rad size is only big enough for about 200-210 deg temps, but more fan flow certainly can help
Now in 30-40 deg ambient i can leave fans off and hold 190 ish driving. One fan on i can keep 170.
Thinking more rad area and more fan flow would be best for lower than 200 deg temps but my motor seems to run better the hotter itgets

I have my exhaust already wrapped and will be purchasing a blanket too. Some people have had luck with water wetter and some have not.

I am going through summit website right now looking at all the fans and I am about to go nuts on choosing 1 large fan or choosing 2 small fans as pushers.
Im liking the idea of the 2 8" fans pushing out 2400 cfm each but they have bad reviews on them: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/prm-19128

OR

The 16" w/shroud, but only pushes out 2400 cfm as a single:

Though I don't have a stand up radiator (still have stock on my turbo LT1), I never found an aftermarket fan that could compare to the stock fans. I tried a few but it always would run too warm. With the stockers(now oriented as Pushers), the temp stays at the first quarter mark, no matter Summer or traffic jams, etc. The fans, of course, are not designed to run backwards and though efficient, are noisy in the 'high' cool setting. But they cool magnificently.

Hmmmm. I guess I can tryto see if it fits. but the dimensions of my rad is 27x15.5. I know my stock fans with shroud is waaaaay bigger! But that cooling effect though!

Just so you can see how I did it.

Again, acknowledging you have a stand up Radiator but perhaps something in this is useful. Hope so anyway!

its not just about cfm. those are free air ratings and do not accurately represent how good the fan is. I went thru all this last year. go with a very good brand such as spal. put the largest puller in that you can and do not put a pusher on there as well. it creates turbulence between the two and they counteract each other. Been there, done that. I was set straight by wizard cooling which happens to be close to where I live. I couldent keep my car under 240 running 2 huge fans (pusher/puller) he got me into 1 14in. spal puller now my car runs under 190 all the time.

With 22" core width and 15.5" tall, we are limited to 10-11 inch fans for duals. It will work if shroud is good. And permacool ratings seem way exaggerated. No way a single 8" will flow 2400! A big 16-18" will flow that

Flow ratings are a bunch of BS. Wanna know what a fan is doing look at the current draw

Fans should be irrelevant when the car is moving anyway. If your fan has to run when you are moving over 30mph your cooling system is inadequate

Two derale 16925 pusher fans in front of radiator. Wire them with suitable wires, relays and fuses. Their in rush current draw is a lot lol

Really no other "good" option.

x2 on the above two posts. CFM Rating I discovered wasn't something great to base info on. I got two seperate pushers that did 2000 CFM and there was an obvious difference between them. Just snag up some Derale's if you need pushers, they move a ton of air.

Hell, be thankful that you have radiators that large!
Mine is 18x18!

Like mentioned above, you are going to want the Derales for pusher fans. I used that same radiator in my Camaro and ran my stock fans cut to fit and they worked very well. I went to Ford Contour fans when I changed setups and they too worked very well. Of course, my setup had puller fans. My buddy had the same radiator as well, his GT88 sitting VERY close to the radiator, and the Derales kept his car nice and cool.

I have no room for a puller what so ever as my turbo sits right in the middle of the rad. Thats why I was asking for a pusher because that it is the only way things will fit. I can try 2 8" but I dont think that will be adequate enough
