Default How to remove damaged balancer

I just had the stock harmonic balancer come apart on my 2004 turbo gto. The balancer broke at the three spokes and all that left is the center that's pressed onto the crankshafts end. Any suggestions on how to remove the part of the balancer that's pressed onto the crank? Thanks for the help!!

No,nothing to grab onto with a puller. It looks to be cast iron.I was thinking about welding something onto it so I could grab it with a 3 jaw puller but again it looks to be cast iron.

could you get a bearing separator on it and use a puller then? cut some grooves in so it can grab

Here is what I would do or try.

Take this bearing splitting puller and lock it down around the crank whats left of the pulley.
http://www.otctools.com/products/bearing-splitter-1

Then take this puller and use 2 bolts through the sides down to the bearing splitter, use the center bolt of this puller on the crank shaft.

This is what the 2 puller combo will look like, I did this to my power steering pulley.

Not 100% sure that will work but I have a large puller set in the shop to try for free. So maybe rent them if your going to give my idea a go.

Tree'd sucka.

I do this quite a bit on the farm but use a standard two jaw puller with the bearing separater.

You wouldn't need a press. The puller in the second link I posted has threads. You will pull against the crank shaft with the center bolt in the puller.

Front covers are cheap.

Destroy front cover and cut remains off with a grinder, taking care not to hit the crank.

It'll be a miracle to get that off with the front cover still in place.

You might be able to weld some pieces on it, then use a puller right away and hope the heat will help it come off
Now confess, you tried to pull the balancer w/o taking the bolt out, lol
Actually saw that once

Did you have hot pipes running in close proximity to the balancer?

Might as well yank the motor. My guess is the bearings are toast after that. I would at least check.

DAMN, this scares me, haha, as 4banger mentioned, I too would be worried about the front bearing. I doubt anything could or would have happened to it, but better to be safe than sorry.
