Default Need to check engine timing... help?

I have to manually check the engine timing, so I can sync that up with the FAST.

What is base timing on the LS1?

I guess I can find TDC on #1 and then rig up a pointer at 20 BDTC, does that sound right?

FWIW, I have to get the engine value to be the same as the FAST value, so I input my engine value, and then I change the crank angle to get the values to match.

Step 1, put key in and turn until motor turns over

Is your balancer indexed?

If not all you need is TDC, the only accurate to do it with the heads on the car is to make or borrow a piston stop. You screw it into a plug hole (take out all the plugs, be easier to turn over with a wrench) and slowly turn the engine BY HAND until it hits te stop going clockwise, mark your balancer, turn the motor counter-clockwise until it hits the stop again and mark your balnacer - the point between that is TDC. The car will run a 0 degree timing so you can sync everything by using a TDC mark only.

You want to make sure you find TDC the right way and witht he head son a stop is pretty much the only way, the piston dwells at TDC for a couple degrees and you have to know exactly where your timing is for tuning down the road. I'm not even sure if a stop will work with your pistons with the plug angle.

then you just have to make a pointer, once you find TDC you can just make your mark there. I think once you have TDC marked you can sync your timing when its running at TDC. I'm not familiar with the exact setup you are using but with the electromotive fuel management we use you find TDC, run the car an input different values (slider control in the software actually) until your zero timing in the software is zero on the damper and thats it. Be sure you use a good quality timing light, I have seen some cheapo inductive lights be 10 degrees off..

Right I have to make the values equal to each other.

Then you just have to find TDC and make a mark you will be able to see with the timing light, would have been a lot easier to do with the engine on the stand (if you would have known you neeeded to) but its doable in the car. You can get close to TDC by just looking in the plug hole with a bore scope ot sitcking something small is there to try and find the top but you will be a couple degrees off doing it like that..
