Default Turbo Air Filter

Had a old K&N laying around when I first got my car running, but its dirty and seems to have been getting sucked in on itself under WOT pulls.

finally changed location from right on turbo behind radiator to under battery tray area and figured its a good time to get a new filter.

Looking for a brand suggestion, thinking I will get a dry one but no MAF so either or works. 4inch inlet and about a foot long.

Default Turbo Air Filter

I bought a 4" k&n filter but it was too long for my on3 ac delete kit. So I returned it and got a spectre shorter filter from Auto zone. I have heard not to use spectre but since I got done with my build I haven't gone wot for more than 2 seconds anyways.

Wash the filter you have it hot water and let it air dry. (don't use shop air to blow it dry). Then re-oil it.

Yea?

Just seemed to be sucking into itself when I pulled it off the turbo so started me down the path of replacement.

K&N are "million mile" filters. You'll be surprised how much dirt comes out of one. I clean mine every year. Oil it lightly... and it will be good as new.

The screen idea is a horrible one if you street drive the car much. You suck TONS of dirt in the motor with a screen only. Id never run a screen on a street car.

Hmn ok, I will clean it out tonight then, and yes, I would never run a screen on it

I've seen loads of quite old K&N's go like that. I dont have any reason to believe they were sucking in on themselves that would be causing it though.

And whilst they are supposed to be cleanable etc...when they're in that state, just buy a new one

I cleaned it out pretty damn good and will oil it later tonight.

I would rather order a larger AFE/S&B than get the same size filter, so question still remains lol

I put the biggest k&n filter I could find on my turbo. I had a small one that was sucking in on. Itself just like the op's. Bigger filter=no problems

Bigger isn't necessarily better, although it seems it should be. K&N has a chart that specifies CFM per filter.

You were the insiration for moving the filter out off the turbo so we shall see if it works as well as I hope

Now, engine NA CFM requirements, or turbo CFM requirements?

Have you ever thought about running a Turbo Gaurd? They are the mesh type. I am running the same style. They also did a comparison test to K&N and they blew K&N outta the water. Just my $0.02

Blew K&N out of the water how? Certainly not filtration wise. Those don’t filter air worth a damn. Sure they will keep rocks and small animals out of the turbo, but you will suck in a TON Of dirt driving with that thing on the street. Great way to ruin the engine.

Few 1000 miles of street driving with a turbo guard…

Yeaaaa, this is a 95% street 5% strip car and I ain't rich enough to replace turbos/motors on a daily basis. The JY SBE life ain't for me.

I am gonna peruse the local auto shops and see if the local diesel shop will let me look at universal filters. I would like a large dry filter but for now the K&N is recharged and working.

I was saying it blew it outta the water as in hp gain. I didnt know the vehicle was 95% street driven, so I'll retract my last statement then

I mean, I would hope it would.

I could run no filter if I wanted every last bit of it, but, I enjoy driving my car to work and what not

Well, it's better than smaller i'll tell you that. Once I put the larger filter on my IAT's weren't screaming up like they were with the smaller filter although I also had a pipe ran to locate the element further away from the turbo and piping. My newer 5" doesn't have the same piping effect but my turbo isn't working as hard and my IAT's are fine. Filter is holding up fine too.
