Cut the filter open and search the pleats well and in the bottom of the can. I wouldn't be too concerned about small steel/aluminum particles for the first few oil changes. I would be way more concerned about copper (bearing material). Odds are, you are fine, the metal particles could be left over junk that was in the block from the crank failure they didn't get cleaned out well. Like you said, there is nothing you can do but keep flushing it out and inspecting the filters. Once you get 500-600 miles on it, throw the synthetic in it and let it ride.
