How many amps is the alternator you have now? I take it you've checked the belt condition. Check grounds and do voltage drops all the way back to the battery. Bad grounds can do crazy things. Make sure there's no powder coating or anything on any brackets used for grounding. Then there might be an overdrive pulley for the alternator as well.

What's the normal charging voltage and what is it when it drops? Also, what pumps?

Is the volts dropping b/c it cant keep up or is the alternator cutting out and your on batt voltage? I have an issue with the alternator turning off after ~6000 rpms.

with my fans on it drop at about 4500 rpm ,with them off it was like 6000. volts are going to 11.6 when they drop off. were thinking that the altronator is to small and cant keep up. pumps are two 450 fed by a 8ga wire

The pumps are going to draw more as you up the demand. Which makes sense with what's going on. If voltage was staying up and you were losing pressure, I'd suspect a wiring issue. But that's not the case. Sounds like an alternator to me. Don't rule out a bad battery either. A bad battery can affect the charging system as well. (I'm side you knew that though). Good luck.

All wiring to the relay is good as well right? A poor circuit could cause a greater draw on the system mimicking a bad alternator.

NO WAY you should need a 245 amp alternator. Something would be wrong. That's frickin huge!

Well that explains it, 245 it is! Lol. I don't foresee any charging issues in your future.

For years I had no problem with my alternator, even had it repaired after a failure ( PAS leak killed it )

Next time I replaced it with a new unit mainly for convenience. This one would always stop charging about 6k.

So repaired and refitted the old again....another few years pass and again it failed. Same place repaired it locally, and all seemed well. Except now over 6k it would stop charging too.

Clearly it's something to do with the regulator/rectifier inside that it doesnt like.

I bought a 170A unit from these guys, and also had them fit a slightly larger pulley to reduce alternator speed.

Been using it last 2-3 years and it's been perfect
