Sounds like you are getting pretty close to giving that big boy turbo a test run, huh?

Also, is this pretty much like your top radiator hose? And if so, how is it working for you?:

Great, thank you! I had/have something much more elaborate planned, but at this point I need to put some speed into my build, so anything I can simplify is a fantastic thing.

I hear you on that. Sometimes we tend to over engineer stuff when theirs no need to.

So good news and bad news.

Good news that i hit 20psi on this turbo and it just shreds the tires, 0 traction. Their was something definitily wrong with the on3 turbo out of the box because this turbo spools faster and it pulls wayyyy harder.

Bad news i think it bent a couple of the gen 3 rods. Lol. Was out tuning and started getting a loud tapping sound.
First i thought it was bearing but oil pressure never dropped at all, i drove it home for about 5 miles tapping and it drove perfectly fine. Im sure its not a ring land either no smoke at all and vaccum is fine.

I need to take the motor apart and im betting i will find a couple bent rods!
I hope this is what it is so i can slap on some gen 4 rods in there

Well, that is fantastic that you didn't blow it completely up and make a big mess! Sounds like you should be pretty close to ready for action when you replace whatever internals are hurt.

Too bad about that defective turbo though... It would be nice to know what was really wrong with it.

Was the tune all good on the 20psi hit? How much timing?

Man that’s frustrating! Had a feeling the big S475 would blow the 88 out of the water. Were you data logging when it let go? Duty cycle and AFR look good? I’m sure it was using a lot more fuel than the 88 at like boost levels. You almost need some sort of boost control to limit the boost down low with the gen3 stuff. Or a cam that makes no power till after 5k, and or run 8-9* of timing around peak torque.

Best of luck with finding a set of gen4 pistons/rods! Those things are like gold around here. Almost better off grabbing a cheap china aftermarket forged 4340 H-beam rod (around $200) and running a hyper speedpro piston IMO. Speedpro’s look to be beefier than an OEM piston (more meat above top ring land) and are super cheap. Set of scat I-beams w/ arp hardware are only $328.

Yes! I was impressed how much harder it pulled. Seriously not even comparable.

I have a set of gen 4 rods in the garage and ill be picking up a set of 5.3 pistons to swap them in if the rods are bent, if not ill be looking for a gen 4 motor.

But yes. This turbo is nasty!

Btw i turned the 2nd pump on and added fuel up top before making any hits.

Also i dropped timing to 10* after 10psi

I don't think its completely fair to compare a broke On3 to a well functioning Borg. Something must have been hosed with his CHRA and dragging from the start for it to perform that poorly and die a quick death. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a 75/88mm turbo rated at 105lb/min and 1050hp drastically outperforms an 88/83 turbo rated at 120lb/min and 1250hp. I mean it is tempting to try since the Borg is $670 or best offer on ebay but I just have a hard time believing I will see any gain over what I have now.

This is the turbo we are talking about right: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Bo...peXU2Wb9CwG17Q

I agree if your paying more then $100 shipped for Gen4 takeouts your paying too much. I've sold a few sets for less then that.

Who says the 88/83 flows 120lb a min? There are no compressor maps for china copies I’m aware of? The larger wheel and exhaust housing on the s475 alone is going to make a big difference. That coupled with the extended tips and newer wheel designs. Unless there’s a back-to-back shoot out though I agree… we are all just guessing.

The Billett version is a copy of the PTE MVS offering. May be worth an email to PTE?
