Rocker bolt backing out
And it certainly doesnt seem to be a common problem, if it was then yes you could probably say it isnt adequate.
I used a lever-type spring compressor with a rocker bolt run down and when compressing the spring the bolt just bends backwards a darn good amount while I install the springs. Now, I fully realize there is tremendous mechanical advantage against that bolt when using a lever, but my BBC studs don't move when I use it lol! I would bet there's some deflection on that little (8mm?) bolt when its holding a rocker that trying to open 400lbs of spring pressure. It doesn't appear to be an issue at all as we really don't hear of any failures, but I think a beefier bolt would be better here. I've seen some excessive trunnion wear when using those aftermarket trunnion kits...could deflection have been a factor?
I don't think everybody is going to run out in their garage and drill out their heads and trunnions for a larger bolt so it's all pointless I guess.
Turned out the camshaft lobe was in the process of getting wiped. So as I drove, the lobe would get smaller, allowing slack/clearance, and that would "help" it further loose the bolt.
