Default Budget Turbo For 700 rwhp

Curious what budget turbo would be best for my setup. Looking at doing a single turbo setup, T4, and my car is a 6 speed manual and will continue to be. I'd like to be at 700 rwhp when all is said and done. I'm just wondering what budget turbo would be best suited for my setup. Budget wise, the On3 and VS Racing turbos are in my price range. I'm just not that familiar with turbos and all the ins and outs, so please help me out. The "AR" size is what's particular confusing for me.

on3 88 cant beat it i was disapointed at first not gonna lie on a tune for 8#s it only made 550 but at 12psi i was at 660 so it does better in the higher boost at 22 psi its pushing out 900 some.say its not very effecient i wanted 900hp i did it with a 550$ turbo the end. plus its smaller size made it fit nicely under my s10 stock.hood 360 thrust bearing makes plumbing easy i have 10lbs of boost through a log manifold at 3700rpm on a 5.3 block bored out to 5.7 80# injectors methanol injection ebay intercooler stock tb and ls6 intake th400 hp robber and a junkyard 8.8 its been 5.92 on cheap *** comp.3 way shocks and leaf springs with caltracs im.pretty happy

What do you consider 'budget'?
Less than $1000?
Less than $500?

T4 S475 is less than $1000 and will make 700whp on almost any engine depending on turbine wheel size.

On3/VS 7875 is a couple hundred cheaper than T4 S475 and can make ~800 wheel with a manual trans.

I wasn't a fan of the T6 s475 83mm turbine on a 6speed/5.3 combo, a little too laggy but I think the T4 would be perfect

A/R = Area radius. I'm using the ON3 7876, with a .96 ar. Car makes 765/900 with 14 degrees...this is on a 6.0. Turbo was $425 to my door.

$500.00 or less for the turbo. What "AR" would be best on a manual car? I've heard that on a manual car, you want a larger "AR".

I've been looking at both the ON3 78/76 and ON3 88mm. Not sure which one would be better.

For a sub $500 turbo the on7875 seems to be doing well with a low failure rate. I went with the on3 7875 with the intention of going to a Borg at some point in the future.

If this is a street car, I would not recommend the 88mm. Yes, it will work.....but will likely hate it pretty quick. The 7876 will make less power, but will be more fun...more responsive. A .96 will be fine for street/strip duty. All of this is assuming you are using something 6.0 and under.

And for the record, the On3 7876 is capable of taking you beyond 800rwhp.

Thanks guys. My friend will be doing all the fab work, so it will be a custom setup. Sounds like the ON3 78/75 will be good for my setup.

Now debating on keeping my current heads (AI Dart/RHS) or selling them and getting some 317's. My current heads have killer flow characteristics and have great exhaust flow numbers. Will that be beneficial for a turbo setup?

If the heads flow enough for the cubic inches you're running, then anything bigger is almost irrelevant for boost. Not only does your engine have the exact same CFM demand (but at a different pressure), but you actually increase CFM numbers with boost, which is why stock heads do so well.

Shoot, if you already have em.....run em. I don't know anything about the deck on those heads, but you usually want a head with a fairly thick deck. One thing I would recommend, is going ahead and installing studs while the car is down. No, they are not absolutely mandatory....but they certainly help. Cheaper once than twice.....meaning head gaskets.

Yes, this will be on my stock cubic inch 346. The car is already studded from when we did the heads/cam swap. I failed to mention that I'd be pulling the existing cam and getting a off the shelf or spec'd turbo cam.

That's very enlightening. I know a lot of guys run AFR, TFS, etc. heads on their turbo builds, and since the heads I have flow so well, I just figured it would be much easier to reach my goals. But, if I can get there with some stock casting 317's, I could sell these heads and use that to fund the turbo build.

You looking for something that simply works, and has a smooth idle? Or are you wanting a cam that jams?

I love the way my car sounds right now, so I'd like to have a cam that has a little bit of lope at idle.

any idea what your C/R is with your current heads? if its higher then stock i would sell them and get some 317's to drop compression and use the left over money on springs,PR's and turbo cam
