So its been a couple of years, and the car was running really well on the 5.3L... until it wasn't. Because I blew it up last summer:

High IATs, tight ring gap, and rapid onset of boost are the likely causes that triggered its doom.

After sulking for a while I dusted off the 4.8 that'd been sitting in the corner forever and finished it off:

In the meantime we tore down the 5.3L, and found that 3 pistons had left the chat:

Completely rebuilt the hotside... and added an intercooler and a better discount brand turbo:
