Transferring internals to another block, stock ring gaps huge.
I'm transferring the gen 4 24x internals I have from and 05 iron 5.3 block into a spare l33 block I have sitting here for my turbo iroc. Plan is 15-20# on e85. I put the rings in the block and used the caliper to set depth so it was even.
Top ring has .040 gap and bottom has .035, untouched. Came out of a perfectly fine running 05 Chevy. Since I'm transferring from iron to aluminum I thought maybe there was a difference in the bore slightly to make up for expansion rate differences, so I rechecked it in the iron block and its identical. Anyone ever seen this before???
I matched the bottom to the top. All rods and pistons/bearings rings stayed with their corresponding journal/cylinder. Everything was in excellent shape.
I've seen the same with a 4.8L I took apart. Gaps were huge like that and it was a 100% stock engine. It had a lot of sludge so I don't think it was well maintained.
This motor was also sludgy. Spent a lot of time degreasing and cleaning.
She's up and running now. Just the slightest haze out of the catch can. See what she does.

The blow by might be partly from the rings not seating in to the new block yet. How much have you run the new setup so far? As far as the ring gaps go, I would rather have too wide a gap than not enough !
I drove it to work today, so far that's it! When I parked she had a slight haze coming out of the catch can breather. I agree, little haze won't bother me any. Another broke piston will
yeah my newest motor has reused rings in a dingleberry honed bore and they smoked like fresh rings until I had some decent miles of loaded cruising on them.

i'm trying to figure out how much to spray and when. we have the same turbo and spool about the same speed.
Gotta love the simple plumbing when theres no innercooler ! That was my first plan. No cooler and just water/meth. I chickened out before I even took a test drive. E85 is too hard to get where I am, so 93 is the rule. I took the meth off and stuck a 29x12x4 innercooler up front. Still have the meth kit though. If I can make 12 lbs on my setup and keep IACs down on just the cooler, I will sell the meth kit. If not, I recon it will go back on.
Ya I wouldnt re-use rings when swapping blocks. I would have bought cheap OEM replacement Mahle rings off Amazon for $40, threw a dingle ball hone job on the cylinders and set the ring gaps where I wanted them. Unless you had a time crunch and an event to get the car to, I would have spent the extra day of work to do it.
