EBay 3 inch cutout.....installed (pics)
Towards the end of the season last year, as I was headed to the track on the freeway I hit one of those hellacious bumps....or jumps as I call em and snapped the motor off of my electric cutout. So I'm just now getting around to fixing it (procrastination..i know), and I refused to pay $175 or higher for a simple motor with a plate. Figured I would try one of these eBay units, for $40...i figured it was worth the gamble.

I put it on earlier today, but haven't driven the car yet. Will probably take it to work tonight, and see how it does.

I have had one on my 2j car for about 4 years now. It's hard to get them closed 100% and stay there, so I used a spare pwm output and apply 10% dc while idling, but let it leak on the highway where no one can hear it. Have it ran through a 2 way toggle, one opens it the other closes with the pwm

I had an ebay cutout for 15k~ miles on the last car before selling the car. I had to take it apart and tighten every bolt inside it because it fell apart at first. After that, I worked great. I learned a couple things, for starters I used WD-40 with great success on the internal gears. Regular thick gear grease/lube (like moly grease) was too thick. Another thing was the flange where it bolts to the motor was best left a bit loose. I ditched the bolts and changed to studs, and loc-tite the bolts on the ends of the studs so the motor could walk up and down the studs, kinda loose, but never falling off. This helped get the motor to close the butterfly 100%. Another helpful thing was the switch, I used a simple 12V toggle as opposed to the one I got with the cutout, which wanted to over-close the unit everytime it powered up, which eventually led to it bending before I realized how bad that was for it. When I went to shut it, I would tap the switch to full closed one little tap, after running it down to close position, and it would stay put just fine.

It's only been one day, but took the car to work yesterday and opened and closed the cutout several times on the way just to see how it would act.... all good so far. Much more convenient than having to open my old busted one manually when I wanna play.

though mines the DMH I also noticed it wouldn't close all the way. one trick was that I applied a bit of hi temp rtv in the groove (bottom part) where the blade closes and it has helped most of the time. I say most of the time cause after a year I would need to reapply another film of RTV. worth a shot for those that hear the blade rattle when not fully closed.

they need attention. you have to be the kind of person who loves to get a look inside the device on a regular basis. I had mine apart more than five times in 15k miles. Like I said, it literally fell apart right after installation. They come with all the internals loose- every nut and bolt inside was loose. There is a learning curve, expect to buy two of them, first one is going to bend and break as you figure out how to keep it together.

FWIW you can get the boost activated deals on ebay for about $56 (shipped) form china. The ones in the US I know of are $150. Looks like the same product... But might not be. I ordered 2 to play with and they haven't showed up yet.
Also Badlanz LPE sells electric cutouts that are great quality w/ excellent customer support. You pay the usual $140ish price, but recieve awesome customer service. I've used them alot. Had one fail and they sent me another free of charge. They have sent me replacement motors and even a custom unit with a thicker butterfly/blade. ( I bent the "stock" one)
