Default What Solenoid For Boost Control On MS

Installing an EFISource Gold Box for a buddy and wondered what solenoid folks are using for boost control. EFISource said to search the Sloppy site but I could not find it.

TIA,

+1 for the MAC valve, using MS and no complaints here.

Can grab them for $19.50 from china.

This was the cheapest in the US I found, but doesn't come with the fittings.

How are you guys plumbing the Mac solenoid for a dual-port WG?

For a dual port wastegate, I prefer running MAC 4-port solenoids. They allow you to get a wider boost range with a lighter spring so you can run lower boost on gate pressure if you want. It also allows you to put 100% of the pressure to the top of the gate during spool up which makes a bigger difference than you’d expect. For the extra $20, it’s worth it.

That’s not true. A 3 port can give you just as much range as a 4-port. If you plumb it correctly.

Drill a tiny bleed hole on the top gate supply so it can vent off pressure. I used a tiny carb jet drill bit, don’t recall the size.

With this arrangement you get full boost to the lower port with the solenoid “OFF”. As you pulse the solenoid it slowly phases out the lower port and applies boost to the top port. At 100% DC the lower port sees no boost and the top sees 100%. Giving you the lowest and highest possible ranges of boost for your gate spring.

Thus is how I have mine setup. Works great. My dome line has a .030 hole FWIW.

I've seen that work before but I've also seen that bite people in the *** when they replace the line and forget to put another hole in the line. It also works better in nylon push line than rubber hose and I'm not a fan of plastic hose rated for 150F right next to turbo stuff. Will it work? Probably. But you can also spend $20 more and have something designed to perform properly.

Put the hole in the barb/fitting on the gate. Or in the top dome of the WG itself. Whether it’s worth it spend the extra money is a matter of opinion. Point is the 3-port can give you the same range.

Having trouble finding a .030" bit. Is a 1/16" (.0625) too big?

If you're using plastic tubing, heat up some welding wire and push it through. Not sure about 1/16.

Could give it a go, but seems a little large. Local tool houses should carry "jewelers bits" or "Micro bits"

here is a link to a set.

Throw an NPT tee in there and buy an orifice fitting with the correct size hole you want. That makes a lot more sensor to me. You can plumb the tee RIGHT OFF the boost solenoid outlet to the top port and install your orifice fitting there. Much more robust option.

In the event you want to change the orifice size, you just buy a new one and swap it out till you get the wastegate behavior you want.

You can easily buy small drill bits, plenty used them for years for drilling carb jets.

Or the most readily available small bleed orifice...0.6mm MIG tips.
