Default Borg Warner s400 compressor housings

Hey guys I've been wondering about the compressor housings on s475 t6 turbos. My question is could I take an s480 housing and wheel and install it on my s475 frame?? Would it be just that easy? Or is there machining involved somewhere along the way?? I only ask cause my buddy has one kicking around and it sure looks like it wound just swap over. I'd obviously have to get the assembly balanced again but hmm it looks close. What's the good word from you pros?? Thanks

It'll bolt right up as long as you use the S480 cover.............Just won't last long!

Turbine and compressors are balanced together, BW S400 tolerance is 3 grams I believe, most sponsors get them down to under a gram. Running one without balancing will lead to failure of journal and thrust bearings, and oil seals, ultimately the wheels will touch down and be ruined.

Pretty sure Jose can do the swap for cheap.

But if the S480 is just lying around why not swap the whole unit?

It's not the whole s480 unit it's only the compressor housing, I'd get another wheel and have the unit(turbine and compressor) balanced by a local around my area. I just wanted to know if it was even possible and it sounds like it is! Thanks for the reply

Swaps like this were popular back in the Grand National heyday. I didnt do any boost builds but I sure raced a ton of em and a properly sorted out GN with a compressor swap, waste gate mods, good fuel, on an otherwise stock engine coupled with a Coan converter were waxxing the streets back in the day. Literally eating the 5.0 dreamers on every front. The only cars that were dragging them were big tire Pro Street type cars running BBC and whatnot. The factory 80's wars were being killed from boost

I oft wonder what would have happened if I went this root instead of chasing cubes. Ha

You have to change the compressor backing plate too. The wheel sets in a machined recess in it and an 80mm wheel won't fit into a 75mm recess, lol

I'm thinking I'll just pick this up

http://www.jegs.com/i/BorgWarner/156/176654/10002/-1

I can get that cover for $20-30 and transfer my turbine housing from my s475 to it. I'd be into a bigger turbo for a hell of a lot less than buying the whole unit for $1250 or so

Please report back what all is involved with fitment. I know the batmo 480/3/4/5 wheels are machined off the edge to fit but thats about all I can offer. Is that a billet wheel in that link from Jegs?

I'm not sure if it's a billet wheel or not. But it sure looks like it doesn't it?? Hmm I was looking up everything in the BW catalog and it didn't say anything about what kind of wheel it was. I just started a new job with precision drilling so I won't get paid till about the end of the month I'll buy it up and come back here with more info

It sure does look billet

A billet 80 on a 75T6 should rock pretty damn hard. Turbines are funny animals too, it might over perform if you can get the hotside really dialed and kep the BP from killing it. The T3 had a ton of compressors hanging off it in the early days.

This thread has me very curious about the results, hope it works out mint for ya
