Converting A-A intercooler to A-W?
I have a Treadstone intercooler shown below and it's in a good location and of course already paid for. I have access to free AL sheet and TIG welding as well as other components I would need to make an A-W system.
I believe the intercooler design would flow the claimed 1,000hp due to the design, but just looking to reduce my IAT's even further (already have meth/water inj).
Can I just weld covers over the exposed core (allowing clearance for water to flow across it) along with NPT bungs and use this same intercooler as an A/W? Not sure if there is anything fancy with A-W cores versus A-A and feel this modified A-A intercooler would work as well as if not better than a cheap offshore A-W intercooler....no? I would place the water fittings at opposite corners & sides of the core.
Yes it would still be in front of the radiator but I could change things up to favor the air to the radiator vs the intercooler as I have it now (ducting change).
I like things hidden and out of the way so if I got an A/W cooler, it would likely go in the same spot. I may be able to shoehorn one in the pass fender but I'd need to mock that up before purchasing.
If I kept the same location but bought an A/W cooler, I would alter the positioning to not block the radiator as much.
Good idea on the drain valves. Where I would put the "in" water supply would be the lowest point so hopefully that would suffice for a drain after pulling the hose off.
I didn't know the core size/bias was different but that does make sense. Supposedly this intercooler only has a 1.5psi pressure drop at 1,000hp...whatever that actually means in the real world lol.
Off to chasing squirrels again I guess. Any additional input is welcome though.
Thanks guys.
