Default Mild steel v bands

Anyone running mild steel v-bands? It seems the vast majority run SS. I am welding onto factory exhaust manifolds, which are not stainless, so unless corrosion is a big factor, I thought using mild steel would be better in terms of thermal expansion and cost. I'm also looking at aceraceparts, anyone used their v-bands?

Thanks

I use the frozen boost v bands. When I fit the pipe to them I have the pipe stick through one side of the v band into the other to get that male/female fit. Work great

Silicon intakes sell S/S ones that have a built in step into the mating surface that makes them a snap to assemble, plus you can add a small bead of copper RTV to fully seal them.

the step ones are good if you can control your heat well enough to prevent distorting them. otherwise you end up in the same pickle as before.

I always use at least 409SS, corrosion is a problem with high heat and the presence of h2o from the combustion process.

if you have a lathe you can make a nice heat sink. I'll take some pics of mine next time im in the shop.

limit weld length to ~1" and back step your welds so it doesnt pull. I'm almost at a point where I can keep them flat all the time.

another thing I've seen just recently is the actual turbine housing distorting a little after some pulls. this may be limited to the cheap low end turbos I use tho

Hey Truckdoug, I'd love to see your heatsink. Is it made for a stepped vband? If so, which brand? Would you be willing to rent or sell me one?

Thanks

well i must have loaned them out coz I cannot find them

it's less of a v band and more of a stepped plug that fits inside the v band. the center is tapped 3/8-18 npt and it has a cut from that hole to the edge radially. when you tighten the npt plug into it, it expands. The plug on one of them is a 3/8-18npt to 1/8-27 npt adapter so I can run a purge line to it.

when i get them back from ???? i'll take some pics and measurements.

ive never thought of selling them since they take forever to make it'd be ridiculous cost-wise

Stainless v bands from VS here , mig welded to manifolds after BBQ pre heat , followed by BBQ cool down . 3 yrs dd and strip -no problem . One manifold has sch 40 pipe elbow welded to it with 309 stainless rod and old stick machine , same BBQ treatment. That one takes most of the turbo weight -all good. These are not stepped but a few extra minutes on assembly and you can get them lined up well
