Help with boost leak
I have been chasing a bunch of problem with my turbo setup. It was my first turbo build so needless to say I’m learning a lot.
It’s a 5.3 7875 and it’s only building like 6-7 psi in 2nd/3rd.
I shoved my shop vac (on blow mode) into my exhaust and couldn’t feel any leaks. So I got out the soapy water and found two small pin hole leaks pre turbo. Even after I located them they were so small I couldn’t feel the air on my hand.
I googled and it would appear I should still be able to build more boost even with a pin hole leak?
I’m planning to do my cold side too just curious how big if leak is needed to cause a problem building full boost.
No cold side leaks and with several pin holes in the hot side I was able to build boost. Keep in mind these pin holes I couldn’t feel the air escaping with my hand, so super small.
Here is what I did for future people looking. I had a manual boost controller and a small spring in the wastegate. I put in a 10 psi spring and the bigger spring for my BOV. When changing my waste gate spring I noticed a small leak at the vband sealing surface.
I doubt the leak was causing much of an issue since I couldn’t feel it when pressurized. Now I’m building 10.5 and bleed off to like 8.5. I have a eBay intercooler so I’m gong to reference my WG off the intake and see what happens next but plenty happy with where it is at now. Thanks for the advice.
