Default 5.3 80mm turbo build

New to ls motors and I recently bought a junkyard 5.3 (2003 block) Looking to make 900-1000hp. Block has 706 heads on it now but I’m thinking about 799’s. Should I buy a set of port and polished heads or find stock heads? As far as rods and pistons go is it also worth going with a good set of H-beams instead of buying a set of gen 4’s? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What is your budget? That is ALWAYS the first thing people need to know.

Don’t really have a set budget in mind. Don’t want to spend an extreme amount, but also want quality parts so the motor will last. Say 6k or so?

I have a gen 3, 5.3 motor that has been refreshed with new rings, bearings and arp rod bolts. Motors held 700hp really good I think.

if you get a gen4 and refresh it, I would think it could hold up. I’m going to put a rotating assembly in my 5.3 I think to make sure.

I have went with the Compstar H-beam rods, full floating Wisecos, PRC Stage 2.5 heads, stock crank in my 5.3. Never have had a chance to really push it on the strip w/o a roll cage but in full street trim using drag radials it went 6.4 @ 112mph in the 1/8th thru the Borla catback. I was running a single PT7675 at the time and running E85 , 127# Bosch injectors, Ls1 intake, 0411 pcm and HPTuned by myself. I don't remember the PSI I attained but I think it was 17psi thru a TH350 w/transbrake.

What 80mm turbo are you going to implement?
I recently purchased this one from VS Racing and will work on the hot and cold sides this winter.

A friend of mine has a forced inductions 80mm that he’s going to let me use. that’s all I know. I’m thinking it’s a 80/92. What size combustion chamber did you go with on your PRC 5.3 heads?

Mine are 63 cc . I've recently swapped to a pair of RPC heads. Going to see how they do. They reportedly have thicker decks but there's hardly any info on them that I could find on the 'net.
Forced Inductions has some good stuff. I bought my first turbo from them. They also did a refresh/rebuild of my PT7675 when I was running that. Looking forward to seeing your results.

i appreciate your help, I think I’m going to try those PRC heads, 660 springs, ls7 lifters with a set of H beams with Weisco floating pistons, gapped rings and would like to get a cam spec’d. Stock crank should be fine and shoot for around 20lbs with that 80. Eager to see the numbers when finished and hope like hell it stays together.

What intake / throttle body are you running as well if you don’t mind me asking? Hearing a lot of stock tb/ls6 intake answers.

Mostly because of hood clearance concerns, I went with the LS1(stock 98 - 02 Fbody) intake. The TB is an Edelbrock (90mm) and again, not for any perceived performance improvement, I was in a pinch for time(wanted to get it together) and the 'refurbished' stock TB I bought seemed to have a wobbly shaft and gave inconsistent TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) readings. Earlier this year , I tried to use the Dorman LS6 intake but I just couldn't figure out a way to get a 4 port steam pipe to work with it. I tried the stock fbody ls1 steam pipe, then the TFS setup, then the ICT Billet version and nothing would let the intake seat. I gave the LS6 intake to a buddy of mine and went back to the LS1 intake.

I see. Only reason I ask is because I can get a good deal on a Holley intake and tb from the guy I bought my car from. It’s a 92mm tb and some have told me that’ll be too much.
