Default Wideband sensor ground?

After having a aem wideband fail after 15 minutes I sent it back and bought a auto meter wideband . My question is why does it have a ground wire and a sensor ground? The reason I ask is they are both black and are soldiered together about an inch from the gauge. If they were separate I understand. But being one wire why not ground it and run it?

On my AEM UEGO they aren't soldered together. The wire looks just like this pic:

That's really odd, I've run a TON of AEM WB 02's. Its the most reliable WB in my experience. Maybe you just got a bad one.

If you ground the sensor to the engine/chassis ground, then its output is going to be offset by the ground current times the ground resistance. This is why ECUs have dedicated sensor ground wires. Technically all sensors should share the same ground as the ECU. Other wise the sensors can report back skewed data. Also assuming all your grounds are all great (IE, very little resistance) it won't matter much.

i have always ran aem. last year i bought one and had to return it 3 times as after 10 minutes it whould slowly just show full lean . i talked to the tech guy at aem and he said there was a bad batch and the guage was programmed to heat the sensor to long burning it out . they got it right after 3 attempts. i bought a new one 2 months ago for my buick and it worked fine for 15 minutes then went lean. i returned it and bought a autometer. so far it is working fine.
