How do engines fail under boost

Default How do engines fail under boost

In general what are the common failure modes for an engine under too much boost. I am familiar with the need for a beefier rotating assembly in forced induction applications so I imagine those components could be a failure point. Blown head gaskets also seem fairly obvious. What else am I missing, is there a point where the heads, valvetrain, block itself becomes the weak link?

Most either detonate it to death, or specifically pop a ringland on the hypereutectic pistons. At higher power levels, rods will bend, but most dont make enough power to get there or break something else first. As Trendsetter said, usually from a bad tune or something stupid.

I tend to agree with the guys here most failures I see are popped ring lands from incorrect ring gap or detonation. Seen a few bent rods from to much timing at the torque peak also. Hands down ring gap and tune are the two largest killers of any forced induction engine.

My vote would be the tune being off as being the most common.
I made 700whp on a SBE Gen III LS1 with just pump gas for years and it had a beat up ring land from dropping a valve.
Pat G tuned it and it was running **** when I sold it and still running **** right up until the point the new owner spun it out and put into a ditch.....
In fact he sent me a video of the car recently all fucked up with no front body work doing a burnout so its still going even now lmfao.

As mentioned, Detonation, detonation, and detonation... which is the result of tune not right for the fuel used, timing not adjusted when IAT too high, ECT too high, CC temp too high, etc. Heads lifted, rods bent, pistons damaged are all a good sign of detonation especially at or below peak tq. Ring land popped with insufficient ring gap.

Blowing a head gasket is preferable to torching heads and blocks or putting a hole in a block, it's like a fuse.

That said, like err'body said it's poor tuning, or not having the right parts to support your power level, lots of reasons.

Best thing to do is start with your goals, and then select a solid shop to work with, they should be able to make sure you are selecting the right parts.
