What its need to build a boosted engine?

Default What its need to build a boosted engine?

Hello, i have a procharge and now i'm building a new block (Je pistons, manly rods, bearings and arp stud kit)
The question is can my stock ls3 heads and stock cam can handle the boost and the power my goal is 17 boost and 580whp ?



(My engine is LS2 6.0 iron block and LS3 heads, 50lbs injectors, 450lph fuel pump)

The heads and cam aren't a normal fail point for boost. It's typically piston ring gap too tight that causes broken ring lands on the pistons. I'd run the LS9 head gaskets, and would look at a cam that is better suited to achieve your HP goal. Also keep in mind that boost is a function of the restriction on the motor. So you may hit your goal of 17 psi and 580 HP with stock manifolds. But if you were to say swap the stock manifolds for 1 7/8" long tube headers you may drop to 15 PSI, but now have 610 HP.

17 PSI on a setup like that, even on a stock cam, will likely be closer to 650-700whp.

Thats alot of expensive and unnecessary parts for a small power goal. You need literally none of that to hit your goal. You'd be miles ahead with a bone stock motor and a decent cam/spring kit. You could likely hit near your goal NA with a HEADS/CAM/INTAKE/headers as well. All on the untouched OEM short block. Or even long block for that matter. "building" them doesn't make them more reliable in my experience. *Most* times the engine builder doesn't have machinery/tooling to get them put back together as nice GM did in the first place.

Why are you going to build a forged bottom end and use the stock cam? And only want 580 wheel? TF GOIN ON

My buddy has ran 650whp for long time on stock block heads with stage 2 turbo cam kit. 76/75 turbo on pump gas.

So, what I understood from you is that I don't need a forged bottom for this wHp goal (550) just need to build heads, cam, springs, but the question is will the stock bottom be able to handle the power or it will broken after a while?

Haha I wasn’t expecting to see this when I came to add my .02

OP with a good tune and octane a SBE LS3 can make damn near double the power you want. I ran mine over 700 for years and 980 for 3 before I sold it to a friend.

To add to what's already been said, I mentioned "built heads" as an NA option. If you are adding boost, there's no reason to touch the heads. You could literally drop in some decent valve springs on a stock cam and long block and make 600 wheel hp easily.
