Default tuning on a ls 5.3 non intercooled on e85

Im still tuning on this thing and was curious as to what guys running ls 5.3 engines on e85 are running timing at.I run 21-23 psi and was thinking im really conservative with timing. At wot im 13 degrees at 20 psi.I have meth injection im going to hook up and maybe hit it with a few more degrees of timing but was curious as to what others are doing..thanks in advance for any opinions...

Depends on compression, how hot its getting, etc. I start pulling timing for IAT mildly (1*) about 175-180* on E, then ramp it out faster as the sensor maxes out. So you may be in the ballpark depending on your setup. Where do you plan to spray the meth? I like the setups that spray directly into compressor housing.

Depends on where the timing mark is on the electrode.

Way too many variables for anyone to tell you what your car needs. Put a fresh plug in it, make a pull, shut off immediately and read the plug. Nothing better than that.

on mine im going between the blowoff and the carb hat.My son has the meth plummed into his turbo wheel but it was alittle expensive for the company that did it..IM sure i could tap and plum the housing myself just havent really looked at it yet.IM going to put it on and do some slight testing this weekend

You don't need to inject it in the housing. Just spray it pre turbo. I like to mount mine central on the cone filter pointing at the center of the turbo inlet. Spraying here actually increases the turbos efficiency slightly. The more you spray the better it does. What intake manifold are you running? How many GPH are you spraying? What water to meth ratio?

Spraying post turbo does nothing for turbo efficiency. If you don't' run an IC there's no reason not to spray pre turbo IMO.

All the other information is pretty spot on IMO. I prefer 8 heat range plugs over the 7 typically used. You can get resisted plug boots for a few $ each so you can run non resisted plugs. I run mine around half way down the strap timing wise. You sound pretty close to me honestly. If you get your IAT sensor wet with the water meth the charge temp data is pretty useless to tune by IMO.

Are you saying just tap the end of turbo right where it goes into the pipe.Basiclally I have the borg style vband on mine so tap it right before the vband on the turbo itself.I also run a csu carb and I honestly dont have a IAT sensor on my car.Im running the ngk br7ef plugs on mine currently as well..thanks so much for the info

im running a holley single plane intake and will start out 50/50 meth. The meth and ls as well are still new to me so trying to get a handle on them.I looked at our response again are you saying to basically spray the meth into the blades of the turbo etc intlet blades..

Correct directly into the blades. (centered in the nut is ideal) I've done this over the years on ALL of my turbo setups (and many friends) to some degree. Small volumes when intercooled and large volumes when not intercooled. It in no way damages or hurts the blades in my experience. I've done it with billet blades and cast. 50/50 or 100% meth. The large turbos we use generally don't spin fast enough to cause blade damage. Also when you use a proper nozzle and pressure, the droplets are small enough that they don't damage the blades.

This is not to say that if you ran your setup for 300k you may not see slightly more wear and tear on the blades. I can only say that over many many years of doing this i've yet to see any kind of damage.

I have seen damage on small turbos spinning at crazy fast RPM on diesel applications where the water meth and boost it on full blast over long periods of time. Also worth noting the water meth setups that showed damage weren't using high pressure pumps or nozzles designed to get the water down to 5 micron or so.

With a carb application there honestly is no great spot for charge temp monitoring. Esp. if spraying pre turbo. Aside from using it in the charge pipe pre turbo to let you know the water/meth is "ON" its a pretty useless sensor in your application IMO. Id simply watch the plugs carefully and stay on the rich side of peak power. Watch your plus closely and pop in a new one before making any timing changes. If your not half way down the strap already, I'd add a degree at a time after PK TQ to redline from your current settings with a new plug each run until you are.

Again with a hot air setup I'd prefer an 8 plug in there. 7's in my experience run a bit hot for non-intercooled guys in your power/boost range.

I tap and use a silicone based sealant right at the filter.

I just added meth/water spray, I mounted the nozzle post turbo, but might move it to turbo inlet. What happens with the blowoff valve when it opens, like off throttle. Do you get much residual spray coming out. I run 93, no IC'er.

I don't run a BOV on my 2 hot air cars. But I never had an issue with the cars that ran them either. Once mixed with the air, the total air to fuel ratio usually isn't enough to cause issues. There's also no constant supply of fuel. SO i'd think a minimul flash at worst. But I've never seen it. The BOV is open and closed pretty quick.

thanks so much.I will try the number 8 plug as well.I just ran my car last night with the meth hooked up between turbo and hat.I run a csu e85 carb and went 5.8 on 17-18 psi with 17 degrees timing at 18 psi.Im still trying to figure it out but really appreciate you info

No problem! Its not going to magically give you 100hp spraying pre turbo, but it will help spool and make a tiny bit more power. (my boost went up 1-1.5psi at the same duty cycle.) Great times by the way! What's it weigh? which turbos did you go with? Converter and gear?

I went out last night too and am having converter issues. Ordered a 19 stator PTC and its like they sent me a 9 stator! lol RPM was dropping 2400rpm on the shift... Felt great before the shift though!

I havent weighed it with the ls yet.It weighed 3000 with me in it with the aluminum headed bbc and twins.I currently run a single 75mm turbo on the cam only 5.3.I figure it dropped at least 200 pounds with the new combo.I run a 3.50 gear and this is new to me but I run a boss hog converter.I always used ptc and had 2 of their converters and loved them. When I was looking for a converter they were like 8-12 weeks out.I needed a converter pretty quickly and acc boss hog guy told me he could give me what I want.I got it from them in like 5 days and so far so good i guess.I had a converter made by a local company and it didnt work for me.It ended up just going out so that is why I needed a converter pretty quick.I just have a problem loosing a season waiting on parts is the reason I didint go with ptc this time.
