Default Crank and Rods Suggestion

Hi all. Assembling an LS3 with an LSA blower. 10.5 compression, 224/232 cam, and 10” crank pulley (28% OD). Dedicated E85 build. Estimating 700hp.

Is the stock cast LS3 crank and stock rods sufficient for this? Pistons will be forged. I think typical choices are cast iron LS3 crank, forged steel 8 bolt LSA crank, or Chinese forged 6 bolt crank. I’m probably not in the territory to consider above that.

Same on the rods, stay stock, or Chinese H beams?

I have seen a few posts say the stock cast crank and rods are good to nearly 1000hp, but I wanted to get some opinions before I start putting this build together. Max RPM will be 6,000 or less.

Thanks.

Going in a 2500lb race car or a 5000lb+ brick? Is the 700 number crank or wheel power you are looking for? Easier on parts being turbo as you don’t have the additional power required to drive the blower or the loading on the crank. However I’ve seen quite a few Gen V Camaros and Vettes w/centri style chargers in the 6-700whp regularly on SBE’s.

I suggest looking at Summit Racing's options.

Good questions. Going into a 2,000l pound boat. The 700 is flywheel hp estimate. The power will only be used to accelerate, not for top speed runs, so engine not heavily loaded for long durations or high rpm.

2nd looking at what Summit has to offer.

Or a set of weisco pistons and callies compstar rods will handle that with no issues.

I had a fuel pump failure and violently melted my cylinder heads at 18 psi. Summit Pro LS pistons and k1 rods escaped unscathed. So I guess my vote is for that stuff. Not my favorite way to test things but, there it is.

Yep, thanks. I am going Summit Pro LS pistons. Just wondering if the stock LS3 cast crank and stock PM rods can hold 700. I really just may bite the bullet and buy the forged LSA crank and a set of Compstars or Summit Pro LS rods so it is just all known solid. I think there ate more compression ratio options with aftermarket rods anyway (length or pin diameter).

I had a feeling by the username it was going to be a boat. I’m not familiar with the Summit parts so cannot help you there but I’d still think the LS3 parts would be good as you are not turning crazy RPM. I’d think a lower unit or jet drive does not have as high load on an engine than going through a complete drivetrain? Thus a little less concerned on the initial TQ load on the crank/rods maybe.

I'd do rods and all ARP 'ware. I'm not sure how much the cranks are, if they are $1000 ish they get my attention.

I'm spec'ing a budget boost build with Summit now, 1000-1200rwhp goal.

Boats typically run on the top of the torque HP curve,, one load cars don't get in the exact same way is prop shock, if you end up prop in the air, when it hits the water its hell on the crank shaft. I've seen them twist off at the rear journal. (800HP big blocks.. ) And it zings the motor pretty well when you get air so a godd soft touch setup is a good thing. Up side is its hard to money shift a boat.. LOL
