Very nice.

I would consider a different blow off valve. The HKS super sequentials have a reputation for not venting much air.

The motor ended up at 389 CID 4" bore X 3.875" srtoke. A great historical pontiac number We have Sunoco 94 here so that's what I'm tuning it for, 110 unleaded can be had for those higher boost requirements

1point3liter, I was unaware of this problem, is it a well known issue and do they know the problem? I'd like to look into this before it goes on the car. Thanks for the update.

It's just not a part that most of the big import guys would consider.... meaning there really isn't a problem, it just doesn't vent as much air as other better blow off's would and most likely won't fully prevent compressor surge for a higher cfm setup.

I would get a tial bov. They are a very nice 50mm valve that vents 360 degree's around. Won't sound ricey like that HKS either.

If you hunt you can find them for around $190

Here's one from my old setup.

Warbird what comp and boost are you looking at starting off (Pump gas)

8.75-9:1 and 12#'s?

Are you going with a front mount cooler? (Where the bumper support is?)

Intercooler placement is going to be critical with your car.

Chris,

The compression is 9.2:1 on the motor and I'm looking for 14 psi on 94 octane as a starting point. We will keep uping the boost as far as we can go on 110 and see what it makes. The motor is built for it, has 7/16" head and main studs, 75 thou thick ringlands on the pistons and Eagle billet rods so it's plenty strong. Back pressure blows gaskets and lifts heads, with the new full length headers evacuation of exhaust shouldn't be a problem while keeping velocity up to spool the turbo.

The new intercooler is front mounted, longer shorter and thinner than the old one with more surface area for better cooling. Getting air through the rad won't be an issue and it will be mounted further forward as well. I am also running an oil cooler for added protection. Further to that we tightened up the motor tolerance to run lighter oil and maintain pressure.

I've had 2 of those units pass through me and I have pulled both apart. A GT42R even with the larger 102mm exducer wheel and 53trim your only going to squeeze out about 850-950rwhp at best. The GT42-76R would have been a better choice but its a hybrid unit and not straight from Garrett.

1point3liter,

I'll take a look at the Tial, it was the one I had originally planned on using, but PTE was able to provide all the parts combined for a better price. I'm certainly not closed to the idea of switching.

The tial is a much better unit then the HKS SSQV, and sounds more agressive as well. I should have a sound clip of one this week.

That's right in the upper HP range I'm looking for and that's why we picked the 42R. I know the 76R as well and I also considered the GT60R but those units would put my project in a whole new snack bracket. I have no desire to push a street car over 1000 HP ........................................... yet

The new plumbing will work with both T4 and T6 flanges and support larger turbos for race applications. I'm sure someone will stuff a baby thumper sooner or later

Just keep your eyes open for some of the newer T-netics units coming.....hehe. .....you guys won't be dissapointed. You didn't think Garrett was going to have all the fun did you?..lol

BTW, be glad you didn't go GT60R, you will never spool it. Heck a GT47-88 compressor wheel weighs ~450 grams, if I can ever find the papers I wrote everything down on to confirm this. The exhaust side was almost double the weight.

I plan to push it, but I'm just trying to be realisitic on the results. I think getting to those kind of stratospheric numbers would be very difficult, but I'll give it a shot I really want to see where it will max out on street gas and what the PCM can do

They are going to release it in kit form and allow DIY types to install it as well. The plan is to have multiple turbo choices. I think they will even sell it as components that you can pick and choose. The intake side is aluminum tubing for lighter weight and the exhaust side is 65 thou thick stainless.

Not sure on the downpipe yet, but I will measure it next week.
