Default 6 Bolt heads cracking?

I've been reading of a few different makers 6 bolt heads cracking under boost. How much are they making before they crack? Any brands better or worse? What is the go to 6 bolt boost head now?

Friend of mine was making 1700 rwhp when his heads cracked at 8000 rpm and hydrolocked it destroying everything. They were frankenstein heads.

Did he see the cracks starting before the it hydro locked or did he find the problem after it blew up?

I have run a set of dart pro 1 6 bolts ported by butler for 4 years now and never had an issue. Maybe not the go to head but it works for me.

Knowing my friend he wouldn't have run it if he saw the cracks prior, but I didn't ask him. I know he won a couple big $$$ small tire events and lost in the finals to kc maxx at another one. It was like the 4th event on the motor when it happened. Him and the engine builder determined the cause after he blew it up as far as what I know. He is now going 540" BBC with gear driven procharger.

Yeah Eric got the shaft on that deal, FED doesn't make a good product after hearing his review and all the stuff he put up with on those FED heads.

For sure. It wasn’t the first issue he had with them. He inspected them out of the box and had to send them back immediately over a valve guide issue if I remember correctly.

Sometimes people do mods to the heads for cooling.

I'd image the chance of something flexing under boost at 1800 hp is pretty high.

My understanding is heat is what causes the cracks but I could be wrong.

I can only speculate, but I would lean towards this over flexing.

I know there was a valve guide issue right out of the box so they were returned for that. Then it tuliped the valves and were returned for titanium valve upgrade. The the heads cracked.

He was running e85 with air to water intercooler. It may have been at the limits of the fuel. He’s switching to methanol on the bbc and trans will be in front instead of rear like a normal C5. Also sra and 4 link.

The guys I used to help who ran series, and ran in the mid 4s would crack heads from heat, and would have them repaired.

I know Ray Litz did some sort of mod that routed more water to the heads, I could ask for pics if anyone is curious. I think he got the idea from the Ohio Boys who maybe in turn got it from Kurt Urban.

FED heads are junk that is what it comes down to, other people have had issues with them as well.

Yeah you run water around the exhaust ports on the heads but requires machining obviously, its not a shelf option that I have ever come across.
