No not at ALL!!!! Just different. Not chump stuff whatsoever.... a Toro lawn mower is chump stuff. All open to interpretation.

the 5.0 whipple has 1500+ hp potential just as the 8.3 whipple does. they are the same blower. you see a whipple has a male and a female rotor and one is larger than the other. the 5.0 drives the smaller rotor and moves 5 liters of air per drive pulley revolution because the larger rotor does not even make a full revolution. the 8.3 drives the larger rotor and the smaller one makes more than a full revolution moving 8.3 liters of air. I went with the 5.0 so I could run a faster drive ratio. the 8.3 version would have needed a much larger top blower pulley to slow the blower down to the same boost level. the larger pulley on top would not be as pleasing to the eye. the 305 has a higher max drive rpm. the max drive rpm difference is proportional to the difference in the rotor rpms, larger to smaller. at max drive ratio for each blower, the hp, airflow, ect is the same for the 5.0 and the 8.3.

I have never owned a whipple til now. not sure how it will sound. the noise from a roots come from the belt and pulleys. I expect the same from the whipple plus some rotor noise. again, we will see.

I am currently waiting on a .875" shorter drive snout the make things work out. I could space the lower pulley out .75" more, but that adds leverage on the end of the crank thus more wear and tear on the front main bearing.

I did the exact same thing with my BDS blower on my boat and my vette I had the pulley inverted and ordered the custom length snout for a corvette water pump so the snout was as short as possible to eliminate as much deflection as possible...
I do have to tell you that whipple will NOT sound like the typical 6-71. 8-71. 10..12...14..16-71s you may have heard in the past they scream like no other and to me its blissful music to my ears. To each their own I guess. I also did the inverted pulley for asthetics as well as minimal deflection

Best of luck with your project and you must post a video or 2 when you fire it up..... I want to hear your reaction to its screaming when you do your initial fire and give it a little fuel to break it in.

Ahhh good ole low budget movies........loved the fake superchargers bolted to the 78 trans am hood and that corvette was goofy it had like a 85 rear clip grafted onto the 80-82 body or some different rear clip and the scenes where the car would be shifting from 1, to 2nd to third then back to 2nd then to 3rd then back to 2nd like you're NOT going to go faster when your running about 100 -114 about as fast as that thing would go with a better engine down hill and a tail wind but that was a great movie for me when I first saw it at like age 13 or 14 and dreamed for a year or two until I turned 16 & had my license by about 11 AM on my 16th birthday day,........ the other movie I drooled all over the starring attraction was a 1968 Pontiac GTO from "My Science Project" the pearl metallic red one!!! All I wanted to do was DRIVE a car..... the bicycle and skateboard thing ran its course and all I wanted to do was DRIVE!

I am running the 8mm htd drive belt and pulleys. it should still make the typical gilmer belt whine at cruise rpms. I expect it to howl at wot. we will see.

when I had the big roots on my other car, everywhere you stopped became a car show. sure the turbos drew attention, but not like the big blower.

Love turbos but I will always have a soft spot for big *** PD blowers.
The whine, the torque and the visual statement are second to none imho.

OHHHH I know that one, EVerywhere I went with the corvette like Wawa or 7-11 etc. I would pull in and get a few folks come up asking questions and while you talk with them others wander up and start joining the conversation and the first few would leave and more would come up and before you know it, you have answered the same 20 questions 84 times to different folks and 3 1/2 hours just wizzed by that felt like 10 minutes. I even got a job offer to do restorations for a local shop in the area because they saw how meticulous my work is. (Did not see a point of working for someone else and have THEM make all the profits off my hard work and I get 35-40 per hour and they make 10-20 grand on a car I built. So that was a no go but appreciated it and made me feel good that a professional shop owner appreciated my work.

Anyway, when can we hear this beast fire up? How far along are you? Fire it up anytime soon? I also want to see how red hot your headers get when you fire it up and its idling. My 350 with the BDS boy those headers that I got with the ceramic coating to keep them from rusting because I knew they were going to be glowing red at idle and I would need to protect all items within 6 inches of those headers, wires especially, so let us know where your project stands. Good Luck to you sir.........
Jay

PS that Yellow camaro looks like that "Crusher Camaro" they had on that goofy TV show where those 2 knuckle heads try to resurrect junk and drive the hell out of it, and its a total shame they find some AMAZING cars and just trash them or destroy them. One episode almost made me cry they had a 1970 mustang fast back they found in a junk yard and got it running by tune up parts and drove it around and purposely destroyed it. Why cant I find a 70 Mustang Fast Back/Mach 1 etc. in a junk yard for 500 to 1000 bucks that I can get running with a tune up and bring it home and clean it up and drive it? Probably bogus and the car was planted there and they paid 30 grand for it but they do swear these are their true to life finds.

Yeah I'm sure if i had kept the 8-71 and the BBC it would have snapped more necks when I was out and about.

@SR-71 back to your build, so you'll be running some sort of cogged/ribbed belt setup with a manual tensioner? Is there a point where you worry about the crank and main bearing wear?

still running the same 8mm idler and pullies. had to have a 1" shorter snout and 4" longer belt. I don't worry about crank or bearing wear. the belt should be snug when at operating temp and everything warm. that makes it pretty loose when cold.

41ApacheWarParty, if the headers are glowing red, something is wrong in the tune. mine have never glowed red.

not sure when I will fire it again. fedex drug their feet all last week delivering my new snout while it was in the mid 70's. this week has turned off cold in the mid 40's for highs....not a good time for an initial start up on e85 since the bypass valve will change the idle tune up. not sure by how much.

My blower was in a non computer controlled 80 corvette with a standard 350 in it. On BDS website they said glowing red headers were completely normal because I was doing my research and that stuck out in my mind and sure enough boom it was glowing red the first time I fired it up. Once you get the car moving and fuel getting through it that stops but long idles will get them glowing red because of SOOO much fuel and air being forced in it with no air flow over the headers, through the radiator and across the engine its just what happens according to them. I was afraid i would melt pistons and the rest of that but nope I put about 1000 miles on the car before I had to sell it and it never had any issues and the headers coating never cracked or dulled or anything. I purchased the exact cam they recommended and all the internals they said would be correct for my setup and they were spot on. I never had that car hiccup even once. And it looked BEAUTIFUL when I was finished. Especially the marine hard fuel lines and distro blocks and all that just added to its elegance. Having the short snout like you are doing made it even nicer because that was one of the most commonly asked questions I got. How did I get the blower pulley inside out/inverted. I told them shorter snout, pulley does not sit over the longer snouts it is so short the pulley had to stick out to line up with the crank pulley. I ordered it that way and BDS got that spot on perfect too first time around. The ONLY thing was I wish i could have afforded the BLOWER SHOP supercharger, their billet aluminum polished like a MIRROR blowers are just engine jewelry to me. But the BDS I went with because I have 2 of them in my boat and those have never let me down while smashing waves in the Atlantic so I went with what I knew and those guys know their stuff thats for sure. I have high praise for those guys. Everything they suggested and told me was 100% spot on and even got down to telling me how to get my carbs adjusted for the best performance and longevity.

at idle the blower isn't forcing fuel or air into the engine, otherwise rpm's would increase. the carbs/throttle bodies are closed and restricting the air into the blower. the blower can only force air into the engine when the throttle bodies open enough to let the air in. by that reasoning, you would still have boost when you are coasting with the rpm's up.

most blower engines are low compression and want more spark advance. retarded timing will make the headers glow red too. I run e85 so I pull ZERO timing. even at full boost.

whatever works though

I used the truck accessory spacing to tuck the alt and ps in front of the engine so they did not stick out of the sides of the narrow engine compartment of the 32. then I just put a straight edge on the front of the lower pulley and measured to the face of the blower front cover. I prefer the dished pulley look too. it is much nicer than the flat faced look.
