Default Turbo Headers

Anyone run the up and forward turbo headers? How is the spark plug access and how do the spark plug wires work out, coils mounted in stock location?

100% have to relocate the coils and buy an extended plug wire kit from ict billet …. Other than that I like them…. Plug access is a breeze on my car with no inner fenders

Thanks 47ford, I figured that. What brand headers do you have? I seen a video with Richard H and he found 40 some HP difference from exhaust manifolds to up and forward headers, got me thinking.

I have the FlowTech up/forward headers. I mounted my coils on the engine block under the headers. I have motor plates, so no mounts to deal with.
I made my own plug wires with a Taylor kit.

This is in a C5 and plug access kinda sucks….

Truck manifolds might come in 2nd for power, but for ease to work with spark plugs and wires they are first.

Well I guess I got a choice now, looking at Ebay and they had a set of 1 3/4 Flow Tech's on there, new open box for $185 or best offer so I bid $125 never thinking they'd accept that low ball offer but they did. I got a set of really nice manifolds with some 7/16 thick 2 bolt flanges so I'll see what fits the best.

Wasn't that test between the forward facing headers vs the Holley turbo manifolds or am I thinking or something else?

Flipped ls3 manifolds on a couple trucks stock coil location with slightly longer wires works fine. Lots of miles plenty of boost

truck manifolds have made over 2000hp.... they just aren't that pretty. I would love to see a dyno test with Flowtech vs. truck headers on something making 1500hp+ to see the difference.

Up and fwd units have been great for me. Plug access is a breeze once you relocate and go from the bottom. I buy 2 of the LT1 Opti spark plug wire sets. They have 90's and plug right into the ls coil packs. MUCH cheaper than the build your own sets. They are like 25 shipped on amazon a set.

Check out the KSR channel
Swapped truck manifolds to tubular headers, theres a few videos of it but cant remember if there was a turbo change in the mist and a valve spring problem mixed in. Good viewing non the less.

I had mine made by GP headers, they're up (more straight) and forward but I have an LT1 so less parts than LSx stuff. I never tried the SBC flowtechs, but I don't think they'll fit. I tried two different Ebay headers and one set didn't clear at all (even just the shock towers, I didn't have any accessories or even the steering shaft hooked up) and the other set cleared the shock towers, but not the steering shaft or a/c compressor. Plug access from the custom set I made is great from the bottom but I'm still waiting for the local classic car shop down the road to have a bay open for me for doing the hot and cold side fabrication so it might be really bad or impossible with the downpipes on.

If you're doing a custom application and can't weld your own I'd really recommend them as you just need a miter or radial arm saw and you cut up pieces of PVC and they make it based on your mock up kit. They include small metal pieces that angle and swivel too and several small PVC pieces of different angles (I think 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 IIRC)

Looks like GP makes a nice product. Pretty sure that is who I'll pick up a set from vs the Stainless Works or Flow tech.

If you're having them custom made from a mock up kit, it does take them quite awhile, so plan on that ahead of time. Took mine about 11 weeks to make. They also let you customize primary size, put in whatever bungs you want (mine are for pyrometer/egt), flange thickness, collector length etc.

I probably made mine a little too long but I and my welder think they can just have a short turned in pipe to hang the turbos off of.
