Default External oil cooler for turbo LS3

I have a turbo 5th gen camaro SS. I ran without any oil cooler last summer and the oil temps got pretty hot. At least 250+ if I remember right. Too hot for my taste. I got a Amazon stack plate cooler kit but it doesn't have a thermostatic switch for oil flow. Should I use a switch or will the turbo get things heated up enough even with the new cooler? I'm in KS and it's mostly a fair weather car. Thanks.

That is pretty slick, I hadn't seen one of those before.
Improved Racing makes a really nice one but its a pricey.
I had mine on a thermostat switch and manual switch so I could turn it on after making a couple hits when my pressure would drop slightly.
My preussre would bounce right back after turning on the fan for a couple minutes so I was happy, I intend on doing the same to my current car next spring.
This is very similar to the kit I used, had the cooler mounted under the passenger floorboard with a small fan, worked really well.

Yeah I can see where your oil temps got up there, my NA 5th gen I have the stock oil cooler deleted because the original one and the replacement one both leaked. If I beat on it roll racing it would get real hot and i was only making 475rwhp.

Some 5th gen guys use Improved Racing oil cooler stat/adaptor and run lines to a heat exchanger. I have one of those adaptors here sitting on a shelf.

Is this just to make sure you burn the moisture out of the oil first?
Is this really a problem with those who are running gasoline fuels?
I didn't run one on my old car but I wouldn't usually turn the oil cooler on until I'd made a few hits or before pulling into the garage to cool the oil down a little before shut down.
I also changed the oil twice a year because it was cheap so I'm not sure if I'd ever see anything wrong.

It keeps the oil clean but also at its proper operating temperature, unless you are running zero weight

id take 250* oil over 130 all day everyday

200-220 is mint

the most wear happens at low oil temps before it gets to temps

there is a reason they went away from the air core on the c6 zo6/gs and went to a water core

the faster you get to temp the better

I added a cooler with the improved racing thermostat housing and a remote mount mocal

I just wasn’t happy with the recovery I saw without a cooler, you would push over 260 on a hot day if you tried repeated full hit with a very slow recovery

now with the current setup, 200* thermo pellet and fan on at 210 it works great

Always sits 200-210 unless I make a hit, on a full half mile pull from 210 to 235, then quickly back to

I think clean isn't the right word., I would say less oxidized maybe? Just an interesting thought. They didn't change that core to get oil to temp faster... Rather water is MUCH better and getting rid of heat than air is... And coolant is much cooler than water so it does a good job at keeping it at the correct temp

lol mmmmyeah

they struggles to get to temp at all if ever unless tracked

why do you think there is 978 threads on deleting

the water cooler is the best option if the room regardless because it is an exchanger……. It brings the oil temp up much quicker than it would normally vs no cooler period …. That is the biggest benefit of them, not the cooling

This is mine with the thermostat and you can still see how much slower oil warm up is vs coolant, with the water heat exchanger they would almost pair

yes regular 12 volt, it is regulated at 14.6v , I’m never below around 14.0 though at idle everything on, never below 14.3 off idle

I ended up getting the Derale oil cooler adapter that bolts to the block. It's got a built in 180 degree thermostatic switch.

I got this cooler off eBay it’s 10an I’m using it on a hayabusa powered buggy and it has done an amazing job of keeping the oil temps down compared to the factory cooler. Build quality was really impressive for a cooler on eBay.

I have a gplus 30 row cooler from ebay, I am so far quite impressed with the build quality with it(it is also 10an), but I am pretty far away from using it so far.

i run the 34 row mocal 115,

always try to get the most rows possible as opposed to longer rows

This will get the highest flow area and the least amount of pressure drop, with the oil volume we move it is a factor for sure

also keep in mind that as normally configured we send 100% of oil through the cooler, this is contributing to pressure drop on the system

we don’t need to send all the oil to the cooler, even say 50% is plenty to control temps and at the same time minimize pressure drop, and allowing smaller easier to package plumbing to the cooler

i modified my thermostat block to do this
