Default Boost control question from a newbie.

I'm venturing into my first turbo build and I have question that I hope you guys can help me with. Is there a boost control option where I can keep the wastegate/s closed until I have an actual 5lbs of boost and then continue to maintain that 5lbs? My thought was that if I'm only going to use 5lbs of boost I didn't want the WG to start opening at 3.5lbs or whatever it might be. Thanks for any information.

Off hand, OBA/C02 would in theory be able to do that.

Pretty sure thats how Boost Leash works. Puts Co2 on the dome when it sees 2 psi and holds it until it sees target boost, then starts letting off.

put a valve in the line conrolled by a pressure switch. iv done that many times. it will overboost the setting for maybe half a second. if you would use a resctictor and bleed off orifice for adjusting boost it would be faster, but at 5 psi you would need an extremely soft spring.

What are you using for an ECU? You 100% don’t need c02 or fancy boost control for this. If you have an aftermarket ECU you can run a simple 3 port mac valve using manifold pressure.

You can also use/build a manual boost controller with a check ball and a spring. Or a simple boost switch and pneumatic valve.

5psi isn’t worth turbocharging IMHO. But if that’s really what you want. You will likely need a custom or clipped wastegate main spring. Something that opens around the 3-5psi range with shop air on the bottom side. Do that first.

Then build this… And put it inline on the bottom. That will keep your gate closed until boost can unseat the ball valve.

Or use a standard vac solenoid and boost switch set at 5psi to open at your desired boost. That will do the same thing.

^^ +1 to what Forcefed said...a manual boost controller is extremely easy to install and use. They're so cheap nowadays that it may not even be worth the time and hassle to build one.

of course there are the "double sided" wastegates (with two chambers) that allow for low boost levels.
