Best turbo size for power/efficiency for 4.8l

Default Best turbo size for power/efficiency for 4.8l

I have an 06 silverado 1500, and I'm in the middle of a rebuild -- cam/valve springs/exhaust/manifold/pistons/rods/injectors -- and I decided that I want to turbocharge it, but I'm not familiar with turbos on gas engines. Guys keep telling me to put these 75mm turbos on it, but I want this truck to be a good daily driver with around 385-405hp, and a turbo that big seems silly.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Make it a 5.3 or 5.7 and add s366 turbo. The off boost would be much better, but the s366 would work on all 3 up to 500-600 hp. You could go a bit smaller on the 4.8 if you wanted to something in the lower 60mm range if you only want 400whp.

I actually raced a single S366 on a 4.8. TH400, 3.25 gear, 3550lbs, went 10.24@133. Super responsive and fun. It was a VS billet wheel version but it sure worked well.

You should simply swap in a used 5.3 or 6.0 with the matching reluctor wheel and add a cam/springs and be done with it. There is no need to spend money on rebuilding your 4.8.... or even a turbo for your power goals.

@408GT Seems to be pretty knowledgeable in building the smaller displacement turbo trucks like you're doing. He also has a Youtube channel.

Are you sure it even needs pistons and rods? Most of the time, a new set of rings gapped for boost is all that's needed even if it's a high-mileage engine (200k+).

Why is it being rebuilt in the first place? Does it need it? Are you rebuilding it with all factory parts? Aftermarket? Don’t need pistons/rods/manifolds or exhaust. You can simply decap your stock injectors as well.

I’d have to argue that spending money on anything else is pretty pointless with a 400ish* hp turbo goal. Put a S366 on a bone stock untouched 4.8 and it will make more power than you are wanting on pump gas. Don’t even need an intercooler to make 400. VS racing S366 and be done. Its MUCH cheaper than going with an NA 6.0 or even a 5.3 and will perform better. Much more bang for your buck than going with a larger cube motor.
