Comparing Wastegates: quality vs PRICE
and then some things.... not so much.
Getting close to order Hurons Speed truck T4 pipes, and etc.
.
Debate ongoing over relative merit of the several wastegate choices:
Huron Speed house brand
Precision PW46
Turbo-Smart Hypergate 45
XS Power 44
. only a couple hundred dollar variance in price. Question: Which is BEST?
Which, if any are made in NOT XHINA ?
Which would YOU choose for a daily driver family wagon, cold weather, 4 wheel drive, often operating VERY remote far from home.
Thanks for the advice.
if I ever built a nicer car with expensive heads and stuff I’d probably try the turbosmart e gates
Wastegate is planned to use internal spring pressure for ultimate simplicity.
Unless I am being total Luddite, and NEED external dial a boost control.
. Not looking for ultimate HIGH horsepower, Durability, reliability, and travel far from home not breaking **** is paramount concern.

Buy good quality waste gates, Tial, and Turbosmart have worked well for me.
Cheap out on less critical items like BOV's and whatnot.
clean, high temp lube on the stem & lap the face to the fire ring. Forgot to do that on my friends car & had 1 only move 1/4" before sticking. They worked & still work fine after a little work.
Just my experience, do what makes you comfortable.
I tear them apart before running them. Remove any knicks on the valve shaft, debris and crap form machining stuck in the diaphragm. Inspect/clean it well. lap the valve to the fire ring if its bad. (they usually are) Then Re-assemble with red Loctite (super common for screws to vibrate loose). And use antiseize high temp rated grease on the valve stem.
If I do this, I’ve yet to have a failure. Tossing them in without doing it has always bit me. Ideally you want to do this every other year or so for maintenance as well. I’ve been pretty bad about that. Been getting 4-5 year service time with no issues. But I didn’t put 1000’s of miles on mine. I have an 16 mile round trip to the local track and try to get out there most weekends. Cheap gates have been good to me.
IMO any turbo car should have over boost safeties set. In the unlikely even of a WG sticking closed, this would save the engine .A WG shouldn't fail closed anyway, but it can happen. Usually if the steps mentioned above were not done. Either way damage is easily prevented. And name brand gates can stick as well. If you don't have an aftermarket ECU you should have a mechanical "pop off valve" mounted to the charge piping that will vent at slightly above your target boost pressure.
