Default Comparing Wastegates: quality vs PRICE

A Lotta thing in life "ya get what ya pay for "
and then some things.... not so much.
Getting close to order Hurons Speed truck T4 pipes, and etc.
.
Debate ongoing over relative merit of the several wastegate choices:
Huron Speed house brand
Precision PW46
Turbo-Smart Hypergate 45
XS Power 44
. only a couple hundred dollar variance in price. Question: Which is BEST?
Which, if any are made in NOT XHINA ?
Which would YOU choose for a daily driver family wagon, cold weather, 4 wheel drive, often operating VERY remote far from home.
Thanks for the advice.

I’ve had fine luck with the various eBay Chinese garbage gates. I was even able to get them to sell me a replacement diaphragm when I folded one during a spring change.
if I ever built a nicer car with expensive heads and stuff I’d probably try the turbosmart e gates

That electronic hypergate looks bad ***. I don't know if a Terminator X could control it, though, so that's another $650 on top of the $1033 to buy it. Ouch.

Plan is to "keep it simple" Size turbo appropriate for usage, meaning a small-ish turbo that will run out of efficiency at top of intended RPM range.. 5.3 Liter 208/214 @ .550" probable choice of ( single 67/66, 68/68 or 70/70 T4 )
Wastegate is planned to use internal spring pressure for ultimate simplicity.
Unless I am being total Luddite, and NEED external dial a boost control.
. Not looking for ultimate HIGH horsepower, Durability, reliability, and travel far from home not breaking **** is paramount concern.

I went with Summit units including BOV. Just installed them today finally. My reasoning was ill update it later get this thing going first. Looks like the same versions another company sells and advertise them as accurate using co2 control. Ive seen them installed on some heavy hitters so I gave them a chance for the time being. Eventually swap them out for Turbosmarts etc in the future, but if they work and control good using co2 ill leave them.

You seem more concerned with reliability than cost efficiency so based on that id suggest a genuine tial. 44 or 46 size range. Too big won’t hurt but too small could cause creep.

Been running VS Racing gates for the last 6 or so years on multiple different cars most with co2. Never once had an issues except the bolts and clamps are easy to strip out.

Same here with VS gates on 2 projects with no issues, mine is 30k miles / 5 yrs - no issues and have been 1200+ miles from home on many occasions. Wastegate is a pretty simple device, as long as the valve seats well on the fire ring , the stem has enough clearance and no burrs and the diaphragm isn't torn or deformed/ pinched. Bench test and good to go

IMO, WG placement is just as important, if not more important than brand.

I don't have good luck so using chinese products that can literally make or break your engine isn't a risk I'm willing to take.
Buy good quality waste gates, Tial, and Turbosmart have worked well for me.
Cheap out on less critical items like BOV's and whatnot.

I've had Turbosmart & JGS gates both very nice & work well. On my car now is ebay turbosmart compgate knockoffs($50ea). They've worked well but when I got them, pulled them apart to deburr,
clean, high temp lube on the stem & lap the face to the fire ring. Forgot to do that on my friends car & had 1 only move 1/4" before sticking. They worked & still work fine after a little work.
Just my experience, do what makes you comfortable.

You get what you put into it in my experience. These are bottom of the barrel 38mm gates from Ebay. Under $60 each. If placed well, its more than enough gate. I used them on a divided hotside, one per bank.

I tear them apart before running them. Remove any knicks on the valve shaft, debris and crap form machining stuck in the diaphragm. Inspect/clean it well. lap the valve to the fire ring if its bad. (they usually are) Then Re-assemble with red Loctite (super common for screws to vibrate loose). And use antiseize high temp rated grease on the valve stem.

If I do this, I’ve yet to have a failure. Tossing them in without doing it has always bit me. Ideally you want to do this every other year or so for maintenance as well. I’ve been pretty bad about that. Been getting 4-5 year service time with no issues. But I didn’t put 1000’s of miles on mine. I have an 16 mile round trip to the local track and try to get out there most weekends. Cheap gates have been good to me.

I had a cheap one fail and my boost almost tripled on one pull. I know it isn't everyone's expierence, but boosting the car wasn't cheap to start with so what's another four hundred dollars. Trying to save a few hundred bucks, almost cost me thousands. I immediately took it off and get a Turbosmart, I run a cheap wastegate, but if it fails I will add a Turbosmart one to match.

That isn't really a concern if you run an aftermarket ECU with the correct safeties in place. ( I know not all do or can).

IMO any turbo car should have over boost safeties set. In the unlikely even of a WG sticking closed, this would save the engine .A WG shouldn't fail closed anyway, but it can happen. Usually if the steps mentioned above were not done. Either way damage is easily prevented. And name brand gates can stick as well. If you don't have an aftermarket ECU you should have a mechanical "pop off valve" mounted to the charge piping that will vent at slightly above your target boost pressure.

I did the same. Reasoning was simple. $1450 for two turbosmart 45mm gates or two summit gates for under $200 and put the $1450 into a Holley. I chose the later.
