Default D585 coils and dwell time

If dwell times are all set to under 4.5ms, can D585 still saturate and cause issues with increasing timing causing problems in a boosted combo?

No.

But that assumes you don’t have other tables that can alter the dwell times. Battery voltage tables often skew the dwell tables and add dwell if voltage drops. Just be sure nothing else is affecting your dwell times. I run 4ms (and only at high boost/rpm) and have never had a spark intensity issue on the d585’s. But I don't run a super radical combo. E85 and 20-25lbs seem to light off just fine. Even with a little water/meth sprinkled on top.

The other option is to sell or trade them for the D581. (old square truck coils no ne wants). Those coils don’t auto fire. And you can run the dwell times up to 6-7ms and they will stomp a D585. But most think the D585 is the best coil, so they seem to be the hot sellers.

Will verify that nothing else will impact the dwell times to put it above 4ms then.
I've seen the 4ms and 7ms video comparisons between the D581 and D585 and the D581's looked pretty good. I may just use use D581's instead.
Thanks again!

Can you post a table how you setup for coil dwell? I have a methanol 5.3 with D581 coils and am having some spark blowout.

I don't have my lap top. But it would be something similar to this. Just replace the 5's with 7's.

What RPM does this occur ?
This is very much more likely a spark plug GAP problem than coil dwell issue.

Seems to start around 25lbs of boost and gets worse to 35. That's the highest I have tried. BR7EF gapped to .018"
I was running the stock holey 58x coil settings, I think the default is 3.5ms dwell.

I'd gap at .015 and crank the dwell up to 7ms in all cells over 20 and give it a go. Can go back and open up up gap if that happens to clear up your issues.

Always liked this video comparison.

I'll give it a shot next weekend at LS fest! Have any experience pushing BR7EF plugs past 30lbs? I tried the NGK race non resister -10 plugs and had crazy electrical issues with sensors.

Many have, I’m not a fan of it. I just buy the NGK resisted boots. They are great anyway. They screw on easily and have a nice positive snap connect. Made of hard heat resistant plastic. They have a 90 that works well for most stuff I do. IF you shop around you can find them for about $5 each.

Then you can run non resisted plugs what ever heat range you want. Id run the 8’s. If you are in pinch the iridium plugs are available in cooler ranges and resisted. But usually about $8 a plug.
