Default ATI Twin Intercooler Talk

Those that have the twin intercoolers and a Trans Am, lets see what you think of this idea. The trans am has a opening below both turn signals and just above the twin intercoolers. Now there is a lot of air going through these openings and trying to pass through the intercoolers. ATI places deflectors on the bottom rear of the intercoolers trying to deflect the air from under the front bumper through the intercoolers. So you have air coming through the top being met by air coming from the bottom which in turn creates turbulence. What if you placed the intercooler deflectors on the front? This would allow the air coming though the opening above the intercoolers to flow through the intercoolers without the turbulence from the bottom. Also with the deflectors mounted to the front of the intercoolers, this should create a vacuum affect which should give the air from above a place to go. It may be better also to just remove the deflectors all together and let the air that passes under the bumper/ intercooler area to just flow straight past without the turblence. I sold my twin kit before I got a chance to check the difference in IAT's with the deflectors on/off/relocated. Just a slow night at work and thought I would give ya something to think about.

Personally I don't think the air that gets around the fog and parking lamps is going to create that much turbulance. SDCE sells fans that mount to the top of the ATI intercoolers. that's an interesting idea. The other thing that no one I know of has tried is to create scoops that would force air up and through the intercoolers. The advantage of the fans is they can pull at low speeds.

id think a fan wouldnt do much
but id think theyd need to stand upright so it can take a direct hit from the air.

did you get a big front mount tom?

I was thinking the same thing. I was installing them on my bird the other day and I couldn't figure out what the "scoops" were supposed to do. I can't see how they would be effective at directing air up through the cores, they simply deflect as speed increases like a mud flap. I suspect if you were to install a piece of aluminum in their place, more air would get through. And I don't think Camaros have openings like the birds do so I doubt they were designed to pull air down through a venturi effect either. Like you said, they would need to be in front of the cooler to do that.

I was thinking about cutting the opening in the bumper cover a bit and installing a small scoop above them and take off the mud flap. Either that or make a real scoop for underneath that won't allow air to deflect around it. I figured you might have to cut a hole in the plastic fenderwell so the air has a place to escape to make that work though. Since I am in the beginning of my project I can probably do a couple of experiment runs to see if IAT does anything with different scoop setups.

PS-did you lose three psi by using 6.0l heads?

Come on somebody with a twin kit do some testing, if taking the delectors off drops IAT temps at all it was a good free mod.

Smokin=yup i got me a front mount

HellOnWeelz=no psi lost when I went with the 6.0's, or not that I noticed.
