Default Anyone using the newer gtr series turbos

I've been on Garretts website and was looking at the newer turbochargers like the gt28r, gt30r,gt35r, and gt42r. Anyone using these or can compare them to others they have used? Do they spool faster and make more power? Just curious. They make them out to sound much better than the older turbos.

I don't know a lot about turbos, but I thought something like the gt42r was pretty big. It says it is good for 1,000hp and the gt35r is good for 600hp. Isn't that enough for most cars especially with the fast spool times? I do realize that there are much bigger turbos, my thinking is that these would cover most cars. Thanks.

You can't just look at the maximum power that a turbo will support. The Incon turbo two gt2535 (not anything like a gt35R) will support about 880 fwhp, but you would never wan't to run them above about 660 fwhp because they become too in-efficient. If you look at a compressor map you always want to stay in the what they call the center island. The center island is were the compressor will make good power and less heat. Outside this range you move more air but it is hotter air. And also have to size the turbine (exhuast side) correctly our you won't make power efficiently.

I had a GT35 on my STS kit and it spooled excellent! Made decent power (check sig for dyno sheet) but unfortuantely felt like it ran out of steam up top so I went with a hybrid GT67 turbo which spools slower (it's bigger so I expected it) but top end is much improved.

GT35R's are incredibly efficient turbos. Made 515 WHP on a honda @ 15 psi with a GT35R.

The GT units are very old, nothing new about them. They have just been re-packaged and re-marketed as new units. Just check the part #'s on the wheels and cross reference with old garrett detriot diesels....lol. Either way they work well, but the wheels tend to be a little heavy especially the larger GT47 units.

Thanks guys for all your replys and keep them coming if you have more to say. This is the way I like to learn about different products. To F8L Z71, if a gt35 was a little small couldn't you put on a gt42 and that would give you faster spool time and more power then the one you have currently? I am very interested in your truck because my dad and I are going to put one on our 99 silverado. How does the gt67 compare to the gt42r?

Anyone else please let me know what you think. We do some towing with a 5000lb boat and sometimes more, up to 7000lbs.

Thanks again.

from what i have seen on Jap cars and over here in the UK, these things are ace. they spool up faster (thanks to god design and proper twin ball baerings) and have much better compresor maps! at the minute they are the turbo of choce as they opperate just as good at lower presures as they do at 2.0bar plus! also you can build some amazing hybrids so it enables you to mach spool up with top end power. i would recomend the true dual ball bearing over the normal anyday. also any concers of the strength of ball bearings is rubbish as they are now tried and tested.

thanks Chris.

EDIT: if the GT35 is to small for your power then i would recomend a GT35r exhaust housing with a GT40 or 42 compresor housing. this waty you still egt good spool up with the advantage of more power at the top end! only go to the bigger stuff (GT40+) if the turbo gets restrictive on the exhaust side!
GT30Rs are good for aound 500bhp
GT35Rs are good for around 700bhp
GT40+ i would say 800+bhp

if you are going above that then i would start to run twins!

Chris.
