Default Still trying to decide Custom Turbo VS nitrous...

I am about 3 weeks away from starting the winter build and still trying to decide on Turbo or nitrous. Nitrous is the quicker and easier route but filling the bottle is getting old. I am thinking about taking December and January and fabricating a complete custom one off turbo system. Just looking for some feedback....

Nitrous setup:
AFR heads and sell my current heads
90mm LSX intake
90mm TB
Jesel Rockers
244/250 cam
Direct port nitrous

Turbo setup:
1.75" simple design 321 SS custom headers downswept for easy plug access
2.5 SS crossover pipe
4" SS down pipe transitioning into mild steel dual 3"
3" - 3.5" aluminum IC piping
88mm turbo
Tial blowoff valve and wastegate
Spearco Intercooler 10" tall x 3.5" thick x 24-30" wide
Wastegate mounted right before the turbo and vented externally
Current bottom end(eagle rods) swapping out the pistons for -10cc dished, katech main caps, new bearings and thermal/friction coat everything.
AC Delete: AC pump and condenser
AFR heads
Custom radiator with dual slim fans

Well what do really want? n20 is cheaper and you will ultimatly probibly go faster. Also a progressive would be really nice for launching, possibilities being endless. A turbo will be the ultamate in cool and can be a bitch to tune but yield the ultamate result. As you do not have to ever fill a bottle. Also for a drivability setup the turbo is nice cause you can choose that nice mild cam for a decent idle and all that good stuff.

Probably both street/strip

If I were to choose between nitrous or a turbo.. I'd definitly go with the turbo.. power at all times.. then if that isn't cutting it for you save for the nos kit and have two power adders.. you'll be quick

not going to get any nitrous votes in here! turbo!!

your wish list is very nice. but i am sure some of it will have to be compromised to actually happen.

i have to say, there are like 3 turbo kits out that are allready proven and fit your car. wouldnt that be less of a hassle?

Would you really need a cam that big and a bigger throttle body with the nitrous?

I really like the idea of driveability with the turbo and a small cam. With virtually no overlap the car won't stink as much as it does now which is a big plus. The turbo will definitely be a hit as far as the "cool factor" and ultimate HP production. There are a few turbo kits that are proven but I just can't see spending 10k for a kit and not be 100% happy with it. The *ONLY* reason that I don't want to go turbo is because alot of racing organizations put a turbo v8 into the outlaw class. Who knows why that is....

NOS all the way, IMO. You're already running 10.20s with what, 600rwhp? With an add'l 150rwhp, low 9s shouldn't be that much of a stretch, especially at C5 weight. The big dyno number FI cars generally seem to have trouble translating the dyno numbers into low ets. Turbos look cool, sound awesome, and are 'trendy', but the NOS cars seem to rule at the track.

Which track is that?

From what i've seen in the Outlaw 10.5" stuff and PRO Hotrod series... turbos are the way to go.

yeah Phil and whomever posted that the nitrous cars rule at the track.... Go to a PSCA (pacific street car assocation) where they are saying in the next two years that if your car doesn't have a turbo don't even bother taking it off the trailer cause you're going right back on it.....

I'm currently doing a 370" SBC Motown block based single turbo big thumper project... AFR 227's, 91.5mm Turbonetics turbo, JE pistons, oliver rods, callies crank..... Looking for 1200-1400hp and still driveable on the street. I"d like to run mid 8's and according to Youngs Performance provided my drivetrain is up to the task (ATI TH400 with brake, Denny's nitrous shaft, 4000 stall 8" fuel/blown converter) he says I won't have much trouble pulling it off..... Tuning is the only variable and i've got Gen VI DFI with a few capable DFI tuners out here to help me out with the details after I do the base tune....

So you know my vote, Turbo in a heartbeat..... If you want the nitrous you can still do that later on as a way to spool the turbo faster.....

me too.. if the turbo doesnt cut it.. do both.. the turbo should do the job..unless you're a real power addict like the rest of us. which you are, no question.. so yeah both is your best bet.

come on.. if you're going to spray nitrous at all.. why bother with the turbo junk, save your money and the weight off the car and spray a big progressive shot.

if you are worried about being on the edge of rules with a v8 turbo, what about a v8 turbo with nitrous on top? never be legal anywhere.

Big Turbo with nitrous to spool it up faster. With Turbo you will have awesome top end pull.

Thats a goood point. I like the idea of keeping the weight off with the nitrous system. My car right now is a blast to drive, feels like an oversized go-kart. It doesn't hook up until the top of 2nd bottom of 3rd depending on temps. I would hate to add 2 months of labor to go .2-.3 faster.

go turbo but keep the ac, you'll love it! With the turbo you can regulate boost coming out of the hole and then have full boost at 3rd gear and FLY down the track.

I'd probably go with the trubo, i've seen plenty of big numbers come out of the LS1 when turbo'd. My shop is getting 2 sets of the 225 AFR heads in december (part of the first batch to leave AFR). Let me know if you need a set Kevin@kskustoms.com
