STS Patent
There's a reason companies like IBM go on patent binges for things most people consider "unenforceable" (like standard computer software techniques).
Having written several patents, let me tell ya -- getting a patent is easy. All it really takes is the ability to describe your invention in completely formal, and ussually incomphrensible terms, and a) no one else has patented what you want to patent, or b) you are able to justify how your invention is different from theirs.
The STS patent is type b.
Patent defense isn't really defense. It's offense. Patent holder A discovers company B is infringing on his patent. He then goes after B. Generally speaking, you are required to prove that: 1) the infringement impacts your core business, 2) that there really is an infringement. The person being sued tries to prove that 1) there is no infringement (since cases don't get far if there isn't, this is rare), 2) that the patent is invalid on its face (very tough), 3) that he developed his method prior to the patent being issued. Patent cases rarely go to court (probably true of all litigation) -- most often they are settled by the "infringer" paying a licensing fee.
Patent infringement law firms exist just for this purpose and do work on contigency after the initial retainer.
Rick's patent mainly revolves around the oil system, but also addresses remote mounting in a specifc manner (below the oil systems -- I forget the actual language). Since no one was doing remote mounts, or hp oil systems, this appears to be very enforcable to me...

IMO this patent is very specific in terms of what it protects. If you can't see that, then talk to your patent attorney

Your sig is great!
And I've already thought about ways around it, for now though making a few kits for my friends will not violate anyones rights no matter how I make them, long as they are not being sold as a sts clone.
