ATI Procharger first ... any regrets?
I know a guy who bought a used SC as his very first mod on a TOTALLY bone-stock '99 Trans Am. He spent the money and then had to go into debt to have it installed 'right'. He is really kicking hisself in the *** for not doing exhaust/induction bolt-ons first. He says he's not seeing hardly any power gains and is totally broke ... with no upgrades in sight.
Has anyone here done the same thing, who does or does not regret it? Remember, this dude has no money in sight to EVER upgrade his vehicle. I think the guy who sold it to him just wanted to dump it on him and told him he'd see AT LEAST an additional 130+ RWHP on his stock vehicle. Could it be that there is something wrong with the installation or with the SC itself? I'd like to give him words of encouragement, however, I previously had eccommended he do bolt-on's (at least exhaust), first. Now, I feel bad about telling him that.

There has to be a problem with the tuning or something else, if he did`nt see any gain from a Procharger on a stock LS1 car. Hopefully he had it dynoed and tuned after the install, you basically have to or it will run like **** or blow the motor. You live in central FL, have we ever met?

On a totally stock vehicle he can see awesome gains but I have founf that it requires custom tuning. I've seen cars bolt a kit on and make a best of 370rwhp only to have it custom tuned and put down 450+.

Alot of these power adder's are very misleading. Most are not bolt-on and go.When going boosted you have to make sure you got the fuel and timing right, then alot of people find out there valve springs are floating which requires stronger springs. When done right these kit's can make some really impressive #'s and last a long time.

stock car here in norcal with an ati D1 at 8psi made 460rwhp.
car was 100% except for the blower, injectors and tune.
as everyone has said, check the install and tune.

I would tell your buddy to find a new hobby. The blower itself is just part of the equation. You also need fuel (larger injectors and pump), generally valve springs, and most importantly a good tune. The real fun begins when you start breaking things (clutch, tranny, etc, etc). FI isn't for the meek.

Modding a car to go fast is not a "spend-once" affair.
On a bone-stock engine (36# Inj, In-line Aeromotive Fuel pump) I made 405 RWHP / 425 RWTQ at 5 PSI with the Procharger D-1SC. It knocked almost a second and a half of my 1/4 mile ET and added 10 MPH to the trap speed.
I added headers, 42# inj and went to 486 RWHP 487 RWTQ, 9.5 to 10 PSI. It would run low 11's all day long and I even broke into the 10's once (a best of 10.98 @ 125.83 MPH).

Before this, I installed a stall converter, good for about .3 in the 8th and a half second in the quarter.
If you have an automatic, a stall converter, IMO, is the single most cost effective mod you can make.

Slowhawk is correct about it not being a 'bolt-on' kit. Anybody who just plans to shell out once for a supercharger and call it a day is not going to get the kind of gains they were hoping for.
I would say about 50% of the do-it-yourself supercharger folks that come through our door put out sub-par numbers because something on the kit needs addressed: fuel system too small, belts slipping, springs floating, crank bolt spinning off, poor tune, etc...

100rwhp gain would be very low. I picked up 170 at 8 lbs ( with fuel and tuning upgrades ) on an otherwise stock car, including exhaust. As far as living in CA., smog and register the car, then put the blower on and hope you don't get caught.

My '02 is bone stock internally. ATI D-1SC complete 8 psi kit, with Ed Wright tuning, plus FLP LT's and magnaflow exhaust that has a Spin Tech muffler substituted in to keep the po-po off my case. Laid down 479 RWHP. Oh, yes, it has a BBK TB too.

How much did all that cost? The guy I opened this thread about, well, the point was he had went waaaaay into debt and his car is COMPLETELY stock. He has no money for tuning or ANY hope whatsoever for future mods. i.e., exhaust, etc.. He's regretting it 'cause his car runs horrible. He wouldv'e probably gotten more putting simply $1,000 into a mediocre nitrous setup.
Talking bone stock ONLY .... this guy can't even buy a few dyno pulls. I felt so bad for him that I wanted to shell out $500 for HP Tuners just to help him out. The guy who sold him the SC told him he would see awesome gains ... with SC only ... even toild the guy he wouldn't need a tune or anything else.
