Custom turbo on STS
Custom turbo on STS We just had some work done on my sons turbo to see what kind of difference it made. Damn, it rocks. We had the turbine wheel blades clipped 7.5 degrees and lightened and we had the inside of the compressor housing polished. With the work done to the turbine wheel, we tried a .70 turbine housing.

Look close to the compressor wheel on the Garrett.

The compressor housing was machined for a 60-1 wheel; had alot smaller, 46 I think.
This is on a '94LT1 car, stock except for a gutted cat and 2500 stall. It has the basic STS kit on with one of our FMIC kits. Before, it wouldnt stall into boost very well, but now it will stall into boost in a hurry. I didnt think it would make that much difference, but it does.
The car feels much better starts boosting alot lower and pulls hard all the way up.

Why in the world did you clip it? Thats a no-no on a high performance application, no matter whether its a front or rear mounted system. The gain you are seeing is in part to making the rotating mass lighter, but now you have dropped the efficiency of the turbine wheel. You will at least help relieve some backpressure, but your PR's vs Lbs/min will dive down. Take the compressor map for the turbo that you have and shift it to the left about 20%. I believe (can't remember my figures) its 3% for every 1 deg of angle added to the major.
