Default Tuned by a pro or me????

I will need to get my car tuned when it's all done. Now heres the thing I was thinking about doing it myself with HPT and the LC-1 wideband setup. The way I was going to do it was just richen the car and pull the timing back and then bump them up a small % while tracking the A/F ratio through the RPM's. I really liked the ideal of me having control of my car and when it came time for upgrade's I could make the adjustments. I figured I could read up here and ask question's when I need to learn this.

OR

I can have it dyno tuned by a pro w/ LS1-edit for the same price as the HPT was going to cost me. But I will have to go back when I need upgrade's and I have no control now.

What should I do

Both ...

Go the route where you have controll but get a pro to set you down the right path ... it isn't cheap .... but cheaper than the 2nd rebuild I' on right now

let a pro do it, very easy to lean out with a turbo if you haven't done one yet.

Yes very easy to lean out but thats why I ordered the XD-1 with the LC-1 so I could watch the a/f closely.

Going lean still happens REAL QUICK no matter whose wideband you have on it....kind of scary to see 12.8 flash up on the ol wideband when doing a base tune....that's all it could take if you are on the stock pistons.

Go with both if you have access to a good tuner in your area, have him do your base tune and do adjustments from there on out.

Both is just to much right now. Talking about over 1k. I am tired of spending money. If I go with the pro should I cancel my LC-1/XD-1 order? Thats 400 bucks for the tuner...

depends on how carefull you are and how willing you are to research first.

I have tuned my car myself from day 1. Lots of reading, lots of asking questions, lots of experimenting.

2 blower setups and now my turbo, 40,000 miles of FI driving, car is still running strong. 80,000 on the clock.

if your not willing to be patient and have it take a long time to learn how to dial things in, pay somebody to do it or you will end up building a motor.

if you have lots of time and willing to do the work, tuning the car yourself is great because you only pay once for the tools

A wideband is mandatory on any FI car in my book so don't cancel that at all. Pay to have it tuned first, BUT BE RIGHT THERE WHILE THEY ARE DOING IT. Just don't drop it off and pick it up later...get a good base tune and cruise on that for awhile and save up for HP tuners or EFIlive etc..
I hate spending the money but these projects get you with all the hidden costs and lil stuff...but its all needed to get the car up and running. I've done this project on cash so far...did the last two on credit cards and swore never to do it again.

I am thinking that might be the best. I really wanted to learn how to do this. I have tuned my old dsm car's But that was very basic tuning of a/f.

Yeah no need to spend all at once buddy, spread it out a lil give the ol wallet time to recover.....
Get her tuned by someone reputable even if you have to make a road trip(slowhawk gets my vote) and then save up for the HP or efi stuff. But make sure you have a WBO2 in the car at all times.

Or you could be a lucky bastard like myself and have a friend(Thanks ZOMBIE!) who was willing to show you the basics and was willing to answer my questions. I pick things up fast and tuned it myself after he put in a base tune. the car absolutely ripped with the blower on and 7# of boost.

I can't wait to get the turbo on there.

Slowhawk would be my first choice BUT thats like a 8 hour or more trip. I might take it to TTP in NJ... If I get it tuned by a PRO...

i was in the same boat as you.
I concluded that it would be better to learn myself and skip paying someone for it. Definatly better in the long run, that way you can adjust easily for octane or tweaks here and there.
the more you learn your self the better. Just spend alot of time trying to figure out what to do. Look at other cars logs and programs. research.
I started messing with mine whilel it was NA, this summer i will tune it FI hopefully.

personally i would jump right in and do it myself...i like having control rather then depending on driving an hour or two to a tuner if i later do headers or a bigger cam or a smaller pulley or larger turbo housing. Read up on how to adjust fueling and make sure you have safe timing/pe levels before you take it out and go at it.

you could always get a base tune from a pro then tweak it as needed for what you want

That's what I did. Slow and steady. You'll be happy with it too. Before dismantle'n the blower, the car ran like a rapped ape with just a blower, exhaust, injectors and a tune.
