Question about air inlet bypass

Question about air inlet bypass ok, so I was told that i could remove the J tube that connects the surge tube to the inlet hat, and then plug the inlet hat with a freeze expansion plug.
i tried this and the car started to show only 5lbs of boost.
i took out the plug, reconnected the original tube and was back up to nearly 8lbs of boost.
are you guys putting a filter on the inlet hat or plugging it up? has anyone experienced a loss of boost when doing this?
