pretty incredible! is this a new function on the bs3? or have say year old BS3 computers have this capability?

I'm curious to know as well. I just picked mine up a few weeks ago. I haven't had time to even take it out of the box though.

Really cool news, but as I just posted over there, what about LS2 transplants and their knock sensors? Compatability?

I have to pose the question and its partly out of ignorance because I have never worked with the BS3.

But, when I used my speed pro there was talk of an ESC control. WHY even use it, when you have total control over your timing? I mean, you run what your tune should be vs. (X) fuel and it should be close most of the time. The race guys running EFI dont use knock sensors Im fairly certain.

It just seems like a moot point to "band aid" your timing with a knock sensor, when you have total control over total timing anyway.

Yes its a "band aid" but when you're putting several thousand dollars into a motor, several more into a computer, and yet several more into driveline and say a turbo or blower, why not use a feature that helps to ensure longevity by fighting knock? Especially if you do a lot of street driving as Dave does. One tank of bad gas and you're toast (obviously the meth helps in his case but still). On turbo apps, if you over boost for a split second and you don't expect to have that much air in the engine per your tune in closed loop, per se, why not let the computer pull timing to keep detonation down to a minimum or wipe it out? I agree that the knock sensors are a safety device, besides, they are the best and easiest way to see where you do have a detonation problem and it allows you to add fuel, sub timing to correct it, more efficently than pulling and reading a plug, which is an art. Just my $.02.

Thats what wide band 02 sensors are for.

I can see the logic behind running a sensor on the street where one uses a lot of pump gas.

Im merely playing devils advocate. I ran the speed pro without ESC parameters for two years. Never had any trouble when my car was running right. I ran it with a vortech supercharger and the speed pro for a whole season and never a lick of trouble.

Like i said any LS1 bs3 sold allready does not have knock control.

In the future you will be able to return yours to bs3 and have it upgraded. It is some hardware and some software..not just a reprogram. I don't have any info as to how soon the upgrade will be available or how much $.

If the current BS3 works with ls2's then i see no reason why the knock control could not be added to those as well. (as long as those ls2 knock sensors work the same way as ls1 knock sensors)

i am giving up some timing control (you can determine how much) to the knock sensors because they are more keen at detecting knock than i am. you are right this is more for the street car that runs on different fuels in widely different conditions (with owners having a wide range of tuning aptitude)

hardly a band-aid, taking out timing in real time is a great concept. if something goes wrong it can save your engine. any limit as to how much it'll pull?

would be neat if they add an adaptive feature to dynamically ADD timing, and optionally update the tables based on the lack of knock...

Alot of them are running aggressive solid roller valvetrains. VERY noisy. Resonant sensors (1 wire) have a tough time with that stuff.

The flat response stuff (2 wire) might have a better time at picking out the correct frequencies to be effective.

Alot of things can effect your knock threshold, not just fuel. It's a very nice feature for street/strip guys.

Full out race, your most likely running known fuel at all times and it becomes less of necessity.
